I suppose the muffler you choose will effect the performance of your engine, are some restricting and how do you tell. What is a reasonable price for a muffler. I found these on ebay but they sound too cheap. Let me know what you think. I reckon 3" tip with 2.5 inlet is bit big for a mini. Personally I'd go a 2" in and and tip size as a maximum, even a 1 3/4 is probably better again. Depends on the engine your running. A twin box RC40 might be the go if you want that style. |

mind you... this IS in the Engine Conversions Forum and Dan IS doing a GTI Conversion, so perhaps we should be thinking bigger...

ohh yea my bad.... in that case 3" is great and you'd want at least 2.5 inlet. Best thing to do is goto your mechanic/engineer and ask them what they'd suggest as they know the motor and setup you have. |

Well I put a Lukey Straight Through one into two. 2.5" inlet and twin 2" outlets. The thing is that exhaust restriction or the lack thereof is more important on turbo cars than it is on NA cars. Which is why you see alot of small capacity turbo engines with quite large diameter exhausts (which are similar to NA V8's). My exhaust is 2.5" all the way... Cheers M |

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... &rd=1&rd=1 That would work a treat, similar to Matts. But I have gone down this route - 3" dump, 3" cat, and into twin 2.5" cannons with 4" tips.

Can someone shed some light on 'back pressure' and what it is. As far as i know it has to do with the exhaust system being restrictive? But you want to have a bit of it - so an exhaust system that is too big is also bad... |

Back pressure is the enemy of power. BUT... Velocity is important, unless it's a turbo. By all means go for a big system it it's turboed, but if not, I'd stick with a 2" OD system maximum for a 1350 cc +, well-worked over motor. If less than that I'd go for a 1-3/4" OD system. Note that exhaust `pipe' is always measured on outside diameter- because it is NOT pipe, it's classed as tubing.

The Doc's on the money for a NA engine of 1350cc or thereabouts big diameter exhausts actually affect power rather than increase it. |
