Hi all,

How does this sound, i just got a quote for my drive shafts (b16a2) for $600-$700.
Now thats not new shafts, its for machining down the honda shaft and resplining to the mini and measuring, but he said when machining it down it could weaken the shaft as the middle of the shaft might be softer.

Has anyone done it this way and have you had any problems???, what HP you putting out???

Steve

Hi Steve,

Sounds about right (perhaps a little dear).

We get ours done in QLD for about AUD$200 per side.

Its best if they heat treat the ends after machining, that way the metal will retain its temper and hardness.

Cheers,
Tricky

it was just over $200 per side for resplining the extra is for measuring, but around $200 for measuring does'nt sound right.

I organised my toyota ones to be cut down and resplined, I did the measuring and got it right 8) . The guy who re-splined them had to soften the shafts because they were just too hard. I then had the complete shafts hardened back to toyota specs (the guy hardening them used part of the old shaft to figure out the rating on original shaft).

The biggest issue with having them hardened is that they can bow, we put my long shaft on a lathe and if i remember correctly it ran out approximately 0.1 mm which is bugger all. It has made no difference on the car.

If you shop around you should be able to do it for half the price.

Dan

Yeh i might just ring around some machining shops just to get it resplined and hardened again , and might measure it up myself.

You have any tips on measuring them up Minimetoy???

Thanks

Steve

Its a long way to Canberra.

It's actually not too hard to measure, when you decide to do it pm me and i'll call you and go through the process.

Sunburst,

Try M&A engineering in Mitchell, they did my shafts for the Starlet for $550 all up, wanted car with engine in and shafts. But did an excellent job. As for power 186hp atw and 12 months on not a problem. Have rooted the front wheel bearings on boths sides but...(they were reasonably old).

Cheers

M

Ahhhh, they have obviously got more expensive, still they are a grumpy bunch anyway. Still they were about the only mob I could find in Canberra if that is any help and they did a very good job...
