actually, if anyone is keen, I have a spare equaliser shaft, you could have a go at adapting it to a starlet

Hi Guys Just a quickie to see peoples thoughts on this. I was looking at the starlet rack the other night and I reckon I could make it fit the 1100. It looks to be about the same length, between inner tie rod ends, as a mini one (therefore a touch shorter than my 1100 one). Would having power steering help control torque steer? Or am I creating more work, and possible bump-steer issues for no real gain? Cheers Madmorrie |

Proper torque steer is turning of the car with the wheels pointing straight ahead. It's caused by the drive shafts being different lengths. Putting in power steering will assist you making the car track straight but it won't stop scaring the crap out of passengers as they watch you battle with the wheel. I am hoping to get an incar vid to show people what it looks like. Daniel |

Do you know anyone that owns a GT Starlet (if so take it for a drive)? Maybe post the question on Austarlet as some of the guys there take the P/S off. JC |

It will make your job of fighting torque steer less physically demanding, but will rob you of some power & add weight. That is why some people remove it. Given a sensible steering wheel size & reasonable upper body strength, you'd be best off without it IMHO |

A corolla 4age 20v gearbox has an equalizing shaft that fits a starlet box ( just have to make a new mount on engine end). I fitted one to my conversion and it has no torque steer. As people have said power steer will help you hold it better but won't stop it. And you could very possible cause bump steer problems fitting the starlet rack. |

Thanks for you input guys. My car will be a daily driver so I don't want to be worried it will dive sideways under a truck or off the road. Sounds like 92 has the best solution. Will see if I can hunt down one of these equalizing shafts. 92 - Do I understand correctly that with a new mount this will fit straight into the starlet box? Any chance of a pic? Cheers Madmorrie |

The shaft is like an inner tripot but about 400mm long and the spiline slots into the gearbox and on the outer end where the drive shaft fits it has a support bearing and bracket, the bracket will have to be made to suit a 4EFTE . I 'll try and take a pic of it |

You will have to shorten both shafts plus the fixed extension to make the whole system work. I just had my car aligned and when i say aligned i mean by a person who knows minis and understands how to align them not just an apprentice at a run off the mill tyre place. Anyway on the way home i put the boot in and was quite suprised at how little torque steer seemed to be present, I'll try it out again this weekend to make sure i was not dreaming
