Hi Guys

Posted in here a month or so ago from the UK. I'm now in WA and my 4age Mini is due in about 5 weeks. :D

Obviously I need some insurance for when it arrives. In the UK there are loads of specialist insurers for classic cars, kit cars, modified cars, etc.

Can you give me some ideas on the best companies you guys use, especially with engine conversions or heavy mods?

Also, just to give me some idea, what sort of prices are you paying and can you get limited KM policies?

Many Thanks

Rich

they are known for good service, they quoted me $330 for my ute with all it's conversions, including 4EFTE and a value of 30,000.

I thought they had lost their mind, but they were happy with that :D :D :D

Shannon's, Vigil, NRMA all do Classic car insurance.
If none of them will insure it(which i doubt) you could try Just car insurance , there a little pricey, but you can only but try.

Since your car has a 4AGE transplant, you are goibng to have some hassles getting an engineers certificate. Expect some red tape!

Shannons also do a "laid up" comprehensive cover while you car is off the road which is handy.

EDIT: You'll find Aussie insurance is a lot cheaper than the UK! :)

Were known..I know of quite a few people recently who have not been happy - me included.

I called shannons and explained my situation and the girl on the end of the line when i told her i wanted my mini insured for $25,000 laughed at me and said rudely, what?! has it got a ferrari engine in it or something - I told her it was a toyota engine and she basically laughed and I got quoted over $2000 for the 4EFTE conversion - and they wouldn't insure it for more than $20,000 without inspection.

I've been with them for 5years, nil claims - 65% no claims protected and that's the quote they give me

Personally i think they have gotten too big and commercial - and they have been taken over since the good 'ole days as well :(

You can also try ryno insurance - i have shifted over to them and they are good.

Yes, I have to say Shannons customer service seems to have slipped a bit in the last year. I've spoken to them twice and twice the phone operator seemed a bit rude. This is despite being insured with them for six years.

I was also VERY disappointed to find out that despite having lifetime 60% NCB with other insurers, you only receive that after being with Shannons claims-free for three years. I claimed after two and half years, they didn't tell me my NCB had been reduced until renewal time. :x

Okay they weren't obligated to tell me, but I may not have claimed had I known. The repairs were not a whole lot more than the excess.

The irony is that if you have 40% NCB on your classic and 60% NCB on your daily, you can cancel your classic insurance with Shannons, come back six months later and they will offer to carry over your 60% NCB from your daily.

Hence I shop around each time the renewals come in. So far nobody can beat their premiums, yet.

hmmm just a few pointers guys.

Remeber that as much as many of the employees at shannons are motoring enthusiasts, they will not always know what you are asking for the value of. to insure a Mini for $20k is without seeing it in the flesh is pretty damn good, yes josh u and i know what its worth is, but not everyone would appreciate that.

In terms of the NCB issue, if you had of faxed them through a copy from your previous insurer validating that you had a protected NCB, they should have honoured it (or at least would have last i checked)

Josh, didnt you already get a quote on your policy a while back for your car??

Tried that - no dice becauase I had made a claim with Shannons where I could not identify the guilty party.

It is (or was) in the fine print that you have to have 60% NCB with Shannons for three years before you have lifetime no-claims with them. When I transferred to Shannons they gave me the 60%, but not the lifetime protection. :(

The policy may have changed since.

I would like to know how many of them are now - this girl on the phone just sounded like a receptionist..

The quote i had was good - but it was for 6k value - as soon as i wanted more - the premium went up accordingly. My gripe is Shannons wanted over $2000 a year - Ryno wanted $580 - i explained it to shannons that i was going to take my business elsewhere and they said they couldn't do better and to make sure i was getting the same policy features they were giving. They didn't even care that i was going and were still quite rude.

Now this is just recently - i have had GREAT dealings with shannons over the previous years, and the staff were nice - IMO i think they have changed and gotten too big for themselves.
