The G16B is not a bad performer and no bigger than a G13 single cam engine

I believe the G16b block is an inch taller and uses a non-forged steel crank.

Hi Marc,

Unless you are going to wring its neck past about 8500rpm, then a cast crank is just fine.

I actually met the two brothers (they own Alstonville Wreckers) who did Cons original conversion (G13B Twin Cam) on his Burgundy Mini (now sold) and they said that if they were doing the conversion again, they would choose the G16B over the G13B everytime.

Apparently, same power output, same weight, more torque and a lot less hassle. The motor is a SOHC 16 valve engine and breaths just fine.

Regards,
Tricky

and if you havent seen cons mini, you should definately search for it.

umm if you check out redlinegti.com you will see that there aint a whole lot of difference between the two.
i mean the most powerful N/A is a 1.3L so you never can tell.

if your after torque then the 1.6 bottom end is a great way to go. although according to half the knowledgable guys on redline its a waste of time. there arent that many out there, so if your gunna do it you will be a pioneer.

either way you go, to get alot of horse power from an N/A swift motor, requires cash and knowledge. as it does with most other motors.

really the choice is up to you.

the GTI engine will be a great conversion, so if ya can get it done I advise it.

as for the power stakes, it pushes and almost 800kg car, maybe bit more, to a 16 second quarter mile as stock. so pushing along a mini it has no trouble.

as for the fuel consumption. I have been using mine as a daily to and from work.
i filled up the long range tank, i think about 33 litres. and i got 627km before i had to fill up again. that also included the mini night at the drags. so five runs down the strip and hour drive to and from the plex. and i have a highly modified motor, so standard should be even better.

hope you decide to go ahead with it.
good luck
Heath

The 1.6 has more torque hands down. They are a little taller because of the longer stroke, but with the transmission being on the side rather than underneath like the a-series it may not be a problem. Inlet manifold is pretty big though so this may cause clearance problems. The SOHC head flows very well for a stock head. Crank and rods are not as strong as the GTi though.

I am into Suzuki 4x4s and these two engines are tossed around as swap options. In a lighter car like the Mini the GTi would be better than it is pushing along the extra weight of the 4x4, but the extra torque of the 1600 would make it a lot more drivable I think.
