They are tough all right but even the toughest motor is only as good as the life blood that flows through them.

Talking to a mate of mine who is an industrial chemeist, he says its the sulphides (not to be confused with sulphites or sulphates) in natural mineral oils that are the problem (Hydrogen sulfide is weakly acidic!)

With the oil resting for long periods it can break down back into its elements, and certain elements combine to form other compounds, like the sulphides and the hydrocarbons combining to form hydrogen sulphide. Hydrogen sulphide reacts with many metals which then produces the associated metal sulphides. Hydrogen sulfide is corrosive and renders some steels brittle, leading to sulphide stress cracking — a concern especially for handling "sour gas" and sour crude oil in the oil industry. The white metal in bearings is very soft and would be susceptible.

You dont have this problem with Fully synthetic oils, as they are not produced from organic crude, but rather manufactured in the laboratory with minimum sulphur content (read: none). Still, maybe a full bearing and seal replacement is good insurance.

Cheers,
Tricky

Well it's probably at it's worst point ever..completely stripped in the engine bay just about and the motor is apart

Lots of things to put back on and rego and blueslip etc...

At this point it gets done when it gets done :(

I hope to have the motor back in the bay this weekend though. :)

Bad luck with the motor josh. i would've snapped it if that happened to me. all that hard effort and BANG... sigh

anywho~ who are you going to go to for an engineering certificate so u can register it. i would've thought that it be a pain since u made your own frame. wouldn't it have to go through all sorts of tests? cos thats wat one engineer told me...
