Hi guys,

Well, i have decided to go with a front mount intercooler... mainly because it is cheaper and secondly, I reckon it looks cool to have a intercooler sticking out in the front. I have a fairly good idea of the size and position I want it in. Which brings to my question: :?:

What intercooler piping diameter do you think will be good for my application?. If I am going to go for an ebay model, its going to be either 2.25" or 2.5" inlet and outlet at the FMIC.

I noticed minstar had gone with 2"

The generic kits sold for the stock EP82 are 2.5"..

I am leaning towards 2.5".. especially since the intercooler of my choice is not terribly huge :? ( 550x180x65 core... can go with a 550x140x65 core)

I am also looking ahead as I wil be upgrading my turbo no doubt! :P

Cheers fellas

The exhaust is coming along very nicely.. a few more welds and she's done.. will post pics soon :)

Pub,

2.5" would be the absolute maximum I would go!

The plenum inlet is 2.5", so it makes sense to keep it the same.

Matt's idea of 2" is actually a good idea, it keeps the airflow at a higher velocity and reduces lag a bit. However, this may have an adverse effect by restricting volume and stifling hp (mind you, unless you had a bigger turbo than a CT9, and also revved it to 7000rpm you may not see this).

I myself am using 2.5" everywhere (including from the ram-air box to the compressor inlet) and then to the plenum. I think Josh, Dan and others use 2.5" as well (correct me if I am wrong here guys!)

I hope this helps.

Tricky

wow guys... that was some quick reply!... thanks heaps!

I'll stick with 2.5" considering i'll be upgradinf the turbo as well.
Time to go shoppin! :D

Do you guys know if the compressor housing on the CT9 can be rotated? this would make life a little bit easier I think on the hot side of the intercooler.

Thanks again.. here are pictures as promised

The mess of wiring before I sorted it out.. I will post a pic of the sorted layout soon... looks much neater..

This is my dump pipe.. bead blasted. My neighbour did it all for me.. he is just as excited about the project as I am! He even spay welded my mig welding with nickel!.. He also spray welded the inside of the dump pipe and smoothed everything out for me... it should flow very nicely!

I only used 2" intercooler piping on mine yes it helps with lag and you see bigger engines making 200+kwatw with 2" pipes so I don't think they restrict it enough when we are only making 150 or so
You can rotate the comp housing on a CT9 it just mucks up the actuator mounting so that has to be modded

Nice work there Pub.
That sure is a mess of wiring. Is that the whole loom including the A/C and heater loom? I thought there would be less wires than that!

Must have another look at my loom, it's in a box outside somewhere...

Are you trying to interface the two looms, or just using the whole starlet loom as a replacement for the mini one?

That is the wiring loom minus the A/C, door control and all that other stuff that is not needed!... the clutter is mainly due to the sheer length of the wires.. After I finished cutting them and shortening and lenghtening them as necessary, I was left with a full sized green shopping bag worth of wires + relays etc etc!  .... The car still started fine and everything worked so I haven't screwed up anywhere

Thanks for that Ben.. you're right.. After reading numerous forums on the net about raging debates about this... seems like 2" is plenty for the power we are chasing.. so I have infact bought all the gear necessary for 2" system.

..I'm using 2.5" for exhaust.. trying to squeeze that sort of tube from the turbo etc  I dont think I have the patience to plan it properly.. 2" should be that much easier to route

yay! :D :D This would make life a lot simpler.. good news to start the day :P

Thanks for all your help fellas!

Hi Guys,

Well.. the intercooler + piping should behere in the next couple of days. The engine is running fine with the new exhaust. I painted the whole thing with VHT paint.. looks very good. Hooked up the thermatic fan to the existing relay in the original starlet fuse box so everything looks stock.

Things left to do:

Drive shafts
light wiring
intercooler

I have 2 questions for you guys:

When the engine is running.. there is a ticking noise coming from what seems to be the idle control valve ( end of the intake plenum) . Is this normal?

When i just rev the car in neutral is it meant to build up boost??? I am asking this because the stock boost gauge doesn't seem to move much.. it hardly makes it to the zero mark... even when i rev it up to around 6000. Is this because the car is in idle?... but I can hear the factory BOV working as it dumps a lot of compressed air into the suction side of the turbo... maybe the boost gauge is stuffed??? :?

I can also see the waste gate actuator moving when I rev it hard but not much.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

My car with the standard turbo didn't boost by free reving really need to drive is to get some load.
Can't say that I have heard my idle control valve ticking but the injectors do which are near there.
How are your drive shafts going I can give you a hand to measure them if needed.
