So people fitting unleaded heads (including mini heads) are fitting cat converters right?

Every car is running unleaded. There are no cars running lead anymore. (except some race cars  )
Just because you fit hardened valve seats does not mean you have to fit a cat.
There is no requirement for an old car to be upgraded to later pollution specs.

Not in NSW at least, there's no call for old Minis to meet the ADR emission standards for unleaded late model cars.
And even for those, nobody here routinely tests them...

It`s not a complete late model engine change, it`s just a cyl head upgrade on an old engine, no ADR requirments to be met, no Dept of Tpt approvals needed... Just Build it, shove it in the hole & drive away. :-)

It`s now completely built, we fired it up last night & had it running on the floor for quite some time :-) oil pressure almost instantly,,, It fired up first kick,,, feels like a real little gem :-) we had one tiny little oil dribble from the oil feed hose to the head, but easy fixed with a little nip up of the banjo bolt, job done :-) no other dramas what so ever (so far) :-)

i`ll whack it into the roady mini next week i expect...

& thanks for your help lifting it onto the gearbox Gordo,,, you`re a champion :-)

That`s ok miniboo,, you`ll get there,,, i have faith in you :-)

I`ve actually made 3 small bore twinky engines, all 3 are done different ways,,, just so happens that this one was the closest to being a runner at the time so we went with it,,, the other 2 should be ready in a few weeks.

get your finger out boy :-)

hee hee,,, yeah i will video it when it`s in the mini & tuned properly,,, I`ve just stuck a single 1&3/4 SU on the end of a plenum chamber & shoved a "starter" mixture needle in there, we whacked a dizzy in the hole & gave it a base timing setting so it would simply run,,, & i`m pretty happy so far, but it will need all 4 tune items looked at in depth once it`s in the mini,,, Cam-timing,,, ign-timing & carb-mixture,,, & temp ... so we`re still got stuff to play with yet :-) But from what it "feels" like when running on the floor is very encouraging to say the least :-)

& this really is about as cheap as you can build one of these things,,, i`ve used quite a lot of 2nd hand bits,,, done as little machining as i could & used the very basic of basic mini parts to make it happen as cheap as possible & i`m going to add it all up once it`s in the car so everyone can get a good idea of the cost of both a full on turbo injected big bore power plant ... & a cheap as chips shopping trolley small bore twinky

Should be very interesting to see the differences in prices between the 2 :-)

That sounds really good Matt, it will be interesting to see the results of $ per horsepower. I am guessing that it would work out very economical compared to spending $ on a 5 port.

I also presume that cost will depend a lot on what you can do yourself as well.

I just got my 1275 (5 port) going today, yay! So I understand where you are coming from as far as getting everything sorted, timing, etc etc etc...

Anyway keep up the good work!
