Does that mean a toyota dealership can supply every toyota part youd need for a conversion? Just at ridiculously high prices?

If it's a standard Toyota part you need, then yes, they can order/supply it (that's what I was told a few weeks ago when I walked into the Parts dept at our local Toyota dealer as a lot of parts are shared with the locally delivered 4E-FE Starlets). For your wallets sake, you're better off getting just the part number and sourcing somewhere else though if possible.

77CV,

Thanks for the post on the engrish version of the workshop manual - just what i need.... can someone tell me if my engine is 80 series or 90 series... I'm pretty sure it's 90 series, but didn't buy the front cut and don't have any prior experience with the engine.

Engine No. 1807620 4E

Cheers,

Amos

Pretty sure there are a few clues externally and the ecu and wiring are different, but the best thing to do would be to ask on the AU Starlet forum :http://www.austarletclub.com

They should be able to help you out.

In my experience, most 4efte engines we get in oz come from the EP82, but the EP91(92?) had a Glanza version with the 4efte also. The later model Glanzas are much rarer here.

I've tried both a toyota dealer, and the austarletclub. Noone can tell me for sure. Toyota particularly said that there are no tell-tale signs. Need a VIN.

How did you choose which manual to get? I guess you had the VIN to work out whether it was EP82 or 91.... dammit!

Toyotas EPC (Electronic Parts Catalogue) requires you to enter either the model, year or VIN of the vehicle to get any part numbers so at least you know the dealer isn't telling porkies. However it doesn't help you any further. I can flick through the EPC tonight and see if I can find any references to engines numbers for you.

Well I've had a look and the EPC can't tell you the engine code of the car when you enter in a VIN/chassis number - only the TYPE of engine (4EFE/4EFTE) and whether it was Manual/Auto. Sorry amos :(

No Probs... Appreciate you having a look though!

I wonder how much difference there is in the workshop manual anyway... might just get the EP82 manual and deal with any differences when they arrive.

The sticker on the ecu will help you narrow down what model your motor is from. Have a look and I'll chase up the details - I have them somewhere in my file!

Cheers 77CV.... unfortunately just dug through the "ECU box" and could only find the box for relays and fuses... Not entirely sure what the ECU looks like, but couldn't find anything that resembles what i'd expect to see...

Only thing i could find so far was that the dizzy has an E8 sticker on it... And couldn't find the camera... will have to hunt that down too!!

Got a reply from the guys at the workshop manual website, he has said the only diff in the 82 and 91 is the "fuel delivery system"... but not exactly sure what he means by that...

Did you find anything in your file?

thanks for ya help...

Take a pick of the distributor. Later models have a click on lead whereas the early ones are a push. Easy way to tell if its an early one....

Well, I guess its about time for an update.

The van has been performing quite well since its been on the road, but unfortunately work commitments have largely stopped me from driving it too much. (I'm hoping that will change.)

I have recently moved from Kalgoorlie to Melbourne due to work and the mini is now back in my posession after a lengthy (4 weeks) time travelling across the Nullabor on a train.
Before leaving WA I managed to get down to Perth a couple of times and give it a bit of a fang through the hills and meet some of the great mini folk in Perth. The van also made a brief appearance at the mini 50th celebrations.

A few recent additions have made their way on to the mini since my last post.
in order of appearance:
HKS varible wastegate actuator. - Made a very noticable difference to how the turbs holds boost. Much more consistent. also gave a more significant "step" between on and off boost. Might not make it that much faster, but it feels a lot faster with the bigger push in the back.
JAM Racing remapped ECU. - raised redline, no more boost cut and more aggressive spark and fuel map profiles. Only had it for a week, but it has given the engine a noticable change in note and willingness to rev. nice crackle on over run too. :D Hard to tell how much extra power it has given. maybe gone from crazy bunches to a bit more.
Exhaust manifold gasket - The other one had a hold due to what appears to be the bottom nuts loosening slightly. Check these after the manifold has gone through a few heat cycles, cause it sounds like sh!t with a leaking gasket. :?

So now just need a free weekend to get into the otways or down the great ocean road. Anyone want to race?

PS. The van will be coming to Bundoora Park on the 13th for Watto's big day out, via the cruise / convoy from the western suburbs. So I hope to see some of you there. 8)

You're definitely on for a race once mine is finished! Probably could be talked into a GOR run as well. For now though I'll look forward to checking it out on the 13th.

Cheers
