I think you will find that a 4.3FD is too low
I used a 4AGE 20v box it had a 4.3FD and would rev at over 4000rpm @ 100kph also 1st was too low

Yeah, if i can find a taller final drive ill fit that. Heard its a harder job on starlets as the shafts are different diameters. But all problems can be solved with a bit of time and discussion.
Or sell it onto a starlet owner whos running 16s. Which would be a bit of a kick in the guts.

Ive made another step in the project. Finally removed the engine from the donor car. Sometimes it made me regret getting a whole car, everything is so much bigger and theres a lot more to faff about with. But its out now so thats all that matters.
Pics are below.
The engine while leaving its former home
Image
The ridiculously big engine bay compared to where its going

Next step is to bolt my gearbox on and flog off the auto then organise packaging and whats going where in the engine bay.
Ill be doing the wiring soon, so expect lots of questions and tantrums.
Cheers,
Joe

The best thing about getting the whole car is that you can figure out the function of EVERY wire is for, instead of trying to find out what they do because they've been severed with the front cut. eg. all the wires that go to the rear of the car are for (Well - it could be fuel pump, fuel sender, Left/Right indicators, main/brake/reverse light, boot light, windscreen wiper...) As anyone doing a Starlet conversion knows, you can't find full wiring diagrams for the Starlet.

While your at it Joe, document everything you find, wires, controls, everything.

Then we can post it as a sticky for everyone to reference.

Cheers,
Tricky

That Four obviously wasn't faster than the car that rear-ended it. :)

I would have buffed the Starlet's rear end out and left the motor in it. :P

I'd love to know what the wires that run from the square connector in the drivers footwell down the RHS sill are for. And which wires lead to the interior light. Please?... :D

I havent done to much lately, but ive got a big update now.
I decided a while ago i really dont have the equipment or the skills to make my own subframe, so i ordered one off Tricky.
I have it now and its looking brilliant, id reccommend it to anyone who is doing a conversion, its a fantastic bit of kit and very very worth the money.
To say im happy with it is an understatement.
Once again Tricky, thanks for your help.
And heres a few piccies of it.

Have a look at the vertical flat plate with 2 holes on the RHS of the subframe. There will be a bracket that holds the gearbox (from the standard gearbox mount location) to the subframe.

It's quite good really because it means that once that bracket between the subframe and gearbox is removed, the whole engine can be removed from the top with minimal obstruction. :D :D

It also comes with 2 brackets that join the engine mounts on the engine to the mounts on the subframe. Ill get a pic of the engine in the frame once ive fixed my daily mini.

One for the gearbox and one for the rear lower mount? I look forward to seeing how it fits and how much of the inner panels have to be removed also.
