But the a/c fan doesn't cool the radiator, nor the radiator fan the a/c condenser. Why would the a/c system care about engine temp?

The Starlet A/C condensor does not have it's own dedicated fan. There is only the radiator fan, so if the A/C refridgerant needs cooling, the only thing the system can do is run the radiator fan (irrespective of current engine temp) which draws air through the radiator, and therefore the condenser also (which of course, is directly in front of the radiator).

Although, I don't how effecient this would be considering the big gap between the radiator & condensor - the fan would be drawing a lot of air from within that gap rather than through the condensor.

On some cars with a "pusher" fan in front of the condenser will work constantly while the a/c is on, but the main radiator "puller" fan will switch on too when the SAC tells the ECU it's needed.

There you go.

Fairly confident it does Alan.

I definitely pulled two fans off my halfcut.

I assume one for AC and one for radiator.

I assumed they had 2 to cover the whole radiator and they put one on the front as it wouldnt fit behind with the turbo in the way.

Yep mine had 2 as well. Though I've since removed the front fan and the seperate relay box it had.

I pretty much traced every wire that was contected to the AC and removed them from the loom. I also shortened most of the loom and mounted the main black fuse box inside as well. Engine still runs fine too

Just don't forget to ground the earth right near that fusebox... I forgot at first and when I'd turn the ignition to "on" the engine would start cranking by itself grounded that earth and problem solved. Took me a while to find it however.

Mmm - I just had a look through photos of my build and my (EP82) front cut (no panels or bumper were attached when I got it) didn't have a fan in front of the condensor... strange... I'd say it was removed before I got it! Bugger :? At least I didn't need it.

It seems that everyone else had two fans except me! Apologies.
