Hi all, there seems to be a lot of posts about 4efte conversions here. Which are complete car porn & totally awesome. So much so that It's got me planning on doing one myself. However, researching the conversion has brought up another possibly more awesome conversion option... The vtec conversion....

Has there been any successful conversions with a vtec in a mini done by members?

If so. Was compliance a dog to get through? Etc.

They just look very pro & super fast.

i think you will find that people on here are too obsessed with their toyota conversions to do a VTEC, as there havebeen many threads about it and no propper answers,

having said that ive heard of a legal road registered on in VIC, using a Modified Minitec fram

Good luck,

Reason I asked was because i had been checking out the kits from Mini Tec... Thought they looked better engineered and more professional that what it would look like if I did a 4efte conversion myself!

Other than the car in Vic, do you have an idea if they would be legal here in SA?

A little bit wrong there Harley. Many of the legal 4EFTE conversions from other states would not be legal in SA. We don't have road regular worthys but the modification rules can be quite strict. The only better side in SA is that there is no power or cc limit on modifying cars. It just has to fit within certain regulations and recieve approved CPEng approval combined with appropriate track testing.

They must have tightened up over there. I've seen a few cars registered in SA that I wouldnt see fit for a paddock basher let alone road use.

See here: http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=56035&highlight=vtec

Nothing's been tightened up that I'm aware of, but it is true there are some truly horrid cars about mostly due to not having regular roadworthies. But these are not legal.

Good luck,

If thats the white Clubman (Peter Dunn's) then No he didn't use a Modified Minitec subframe. He made his own from scratch.

Most of the UK subframe are to wide for our Aussie rules.

The main issue for the v-tec conversion is the width of the engine/gbox.

In oz you cannot widen the wheel track by more than 25mm.

If you look at most v-tec conversions in uk and us they use modified k-series metro (I think) subframes which give much wider wheel track than the usual mini.
Apparently there are subframes available from the US that give standard track, which might be worth a look.

Either way, everyone knows that if you want REAL power you need to fit a turbo!
[and a turbo V-TEC would struggle to pass rego in any state in Australia!]

Another nice V-TEC is TravelleR. Its from Canadia, but worth a look for the proper way to do things, even if it wouldn't pass rego in oz due to the extensive mods.

4EFTE gearboxes are pretty bulletproof, you can't say the same for Suzy GTI boxes.
My mate at work had bearing problems in his at ~100,000km from new... and no it wan't turboed either.
