This is the big decider for my conversion, and it all boils down to, can it be done? The code of practice (QLD) says.



How do they define substantial? If it is non structural in the context of, not having to move suspension/subframe mounting points, but more so just make the firewall flat, is that ok? Will be calling TMR and my engineer on Monday, but if anyone else knows that would be great. I want to do a similar firewall modification like toymini76.

I'd assume you can add "turbo boxs" and such so long as the engineer says it's still as strong as it was before.
People with webber boxs have modified their fierwall so theirs that grey area to consider to.
Personally I'd be cautious about cutting into the bulkhead as that is a major structural part of the mini but I reckon it can be done.

"making the firewall flat" - in other words removing the main structural crossmember that supports the engine, subframe and the front of the car is more than a little bit substantial

i would imagine that any cutting and shutting of a firewall would constitute substantial.

any massaging occurred with a BFH should be ok..

any conversion's gonna need an engineer to sign off, why not choose one and let him/her be the judge.

The way i read it is, any modification to the firewall is seen as a substantial modification.
If you could integrate a structure to pick up the subframe mountings and anything else solid and hold it all stable you can say it is making the firewall an unstressed member.
To really prove that would take a bit of work but could be a way to get it done.

That is only your interpretation of it. Would you class drilling a hole for a choke cable a substantial modification?

If it is something that affects the structure of the car or the strength of mounting points it would be a substantial modification.

The box that runs across the firewall gives a lot of side impact strength, it takes most of the front subframe load into the body and also takes the brake pedals and steering column loads. It is not something to be fooled around with. But that does not mean that you can't fit a Weber box or drill a hole for a hose out pipe to pass through.

My view is that you are better to modify the inlet manifold of whatever motor you are putting in (over playing around with the firewall).

Does that mean that the Yamaha R1 and cradle that bolts onto the subframe without any mods is legal? The miniexvo kit uses a transfer case and electric reverse...... Mmmm ( insert motorcycle noises here).......
