Grab the latest "The Mini Experience" magazine. It has a special on engine conversions.
There is a good range of the common jap engine examples.

To answer your question though: It depends on what class you want to be in and if you want to be able to register it.

For rego you can have up to about 2l NA or 1.5 Forced induction. If you don't need to register it, then use the CAMS guidelines to decide.

while i understand speed costs all i have is time, I have a choice of many classes, never to be road driven { private practice ok }, I just have had the thought of ..... do I use an A series that is already at the upper limit of design and hp output ie; hand grenade ready to go off or do I run a modern and start with 150hp and work upwards ie; reliability, ease of tuning and parts supply.

yay lets have a 130hp 60 year old design mini engine and not have a 220hp modern honda engine.. sounds smart to me...................

ps, formula bmw is pretty slow.. formula 3 used or uses (i think in some of the chassis anyway) a honda engine with lots more power

Yes 240kph Formula BMW FB2's might be seen as slow , but a 71kg engine is light, while a Honda V-Tec makes good power the engine weight is approx 140kg , I was just throwing something different in the mix based on a light engine and useful power.

I,m sure a Daihatsu 1.3 litre efi turbo K3-VET would also be an interesting one to throw in the mix as well, 177nm of torque from 3,200rpm, good for hill climbs

This might give you some idea:
I've got a basically standard Toyota 4efte in my car with exhaust and a bit more boost (still plenty of headroom) and I got 120hp@ front wheels on the weekend. It runs like a modern car (smooth, quiet, economical) and is a BUNCH of fun to drive. Its also 100% street legal, rego'd and built for driveability rather than power.

If you put a aftermarket computer in it, TD04 (cheap-2nd hand from wrx), and a more race biased exhaust/intake, you should be able to get close to 200hp @ wheels reliably, without even opening the motor. (and no hand grenade - still retains rev limiter, knock sensor, boost cut etc, dependant on what ecu you use)
Add a $1000 TRD mechanical lsd and you're ready to race.
Some of the starlet GT guys have similar setups in their daily drives!

You could probably get a basic race spec conversion on the track for no more than about 8-10K (not incl. car/wheels/suspension/brakes etc). Less, depending on how much work you can do yourself.
