I wouldn't bother too much with A/C.

I had big plans with AC for my starlet Mini (currently still in the making). Was going to use the starlet compressor and use the Rover Mini matrix and under dash unit with custom piping.

Until I got the motor in the car....

There's bugger all room and my alternator is mounted backwards through a hole in the inner guard (like many others have done) and I really don't want to cut the hole bugger and put the compressor in the wheel arch too, I think that's going to far.

I did end up buying a Rover AC setup then went forget this! They're going in the other Clubby  . (If you are going to get Rover AC gear for a clubby you should know that the Rover under dash unit does NOT fit next to a standard clubman heater, you will need a Rover heater or similar)

plus you won't get it engineered in SA with chopped inner guards.

Quite true I think.

You can cut the guards a little within reason. The engineer has said a hole that is neat (ie looks like it's meant to be there) for the alternator is fine. But the inner guards should still mostly be there. Also, the less cutting done, the easier certifying will be.

You wouldn't want to cut the inner guards out as you'd get water and all sorts thrown all over that nice clean engine of yours (although on the passenger side there's not much of an inner guard left anyways  .)

Don't let that discourage anyone who is keen on A/C. Where there's a will there's a way, but in my case priorities take over and the window can be wound down in summer. :)

I was considering so i could run rally style windows, just a sliding bit in the middle, and fixed windows otherwise. Id say theres more than the weight of a lightweight air conditioner to lose out of the doors.

IMHO if you can fit air con, i'd do it. I have a Rover with standard Rover air con and it works a charm. Always great sitting there at lights with all the windows up knowing you can keep cool as a cucumber. Sure it uses a litle more petrol and sure it sucks some of the power, but hell I'll take comfort over speed any day, especially in Sydney traffic where you cant go fast anyways.
