VIN numbers only became part of the design rules in 1987 and it was then that they became 17 character numbers that identified the vehicles and the nubers had to be supplied to the rego authorities around the world where the cars arer sold, before this the only way rego would have a note of a vehicles indenty number was when it was regoed and only the stae of rego would have the number, hence why sometimes when a vehicle is moved interstate and the new owner does not have the old rego info the new state cannot find the chassis number on there records

Can you get new plates?

I have a plate with something like

YGS something something,

complies to ADR's __,__,__, etc.

It's a bit tatty though...

I'm hoping there's no more numbers or plates I need to get it registered :?

My van is soon to get rego, it's a UK import that I think may have been improperly regoed years ago.
I'm crossing my fingers that it's been in the country long enough (15 yrs+) to meet the criteria for and import without any documentation.
I'll see what happens!

That is a compliance plate, they came in around December 1969. Not a VIN plate as referred to above.
I believe no- you cannot get these ones new.
The number on the compliance plate matches that on the radiator shroud.
If the plate is missing you can still get registration in most states- provided the number on the body is intact and legible.

O poo... I've cut the front off my mini. I still have it, but I think you can only read half the numbers or there aren't any. Either way, I remember I thought I was going to have problems :? I have a previous rego renewal paper with all the details on it from the previous owner, does that help me at all?

This may get tricky... :?

100% correct!

Sam, you should be ok as long as that VIN number is on the car, plus, you have history of the registration so it should be fine. You may need to show proof of purchase though if you havent registered it before in your name.

thanks for the input guys,

I have got myself a rolling clubman with engine for $600.. body in good nick.. few small problems but body is straight and no bog in it.. always garaged.

As for the VIN number..

when I brought the car from Perth, I had already cut out the radiator shroud..the regency guys didn't get very excited.. they gave a new number which I stamped myself!! and it went through regency no problems..

Now the easy way out for me would be to cut the shroud off this one and just stamp the same old number on this one.. problem solved.. but I want to do this properly..

The car I am getting is not registered at the moment either ( as in the rego has run out).. do I still need to complete one of the vehicle transfer forms or can I just get something in writing to say I have bought this car and then go to regency at some other point in time and get the numbers updated...

Car is being towed in tomorrow.. Time to get myself a argo-shield bottle for my MIG and get working on the seams!!.. should look good

oh and another question: does anyone know anything about internal door hinges for mini's??

Cheer!

Pubs
