Hi Ina,

There is no reason why you have to go the same spring rate back and front.

Hard on front, softer on rear: - therefore red on front, blue on back.

But just take time to research the shocks and not skimp on the cash.

Bilstein are OK - but not the stuff you buy from Mini Sport in UK - rubbish

OOOhhh - Ohlins ST44's - the worlds best shock. Nitro-charged, triple valved and 4-way adjustable.

Good Luck,
Andrew

whoa...they be sexy...can you run them without coils over them? it says they're made for 2" coils...

they look better than the bilstein ones :P wonder how much they are...if they are like $2000 a pop then i am gonna have to say no probably :(

are they 1-size fits all or do i need to get a certain size to fit the mini? given i am gonna be making my own shock struts (as per the gomini vtec frame) i could more or less make em to fit the shock...but just wondering :P

Ina,

I believe that the Ohlins shocks your looking for are:

Rover Mini 63-99 RO304(Front) RO305(Rear) Category: Sport

Probably the bst shock you can get for a Brick.

Cheers,
Andy

Ina,

Yes, Steve Cramer are the official agents in Australia for Ohlins.

However, it may be worth your while to investigate how much it would be to purchase from the US and get them imported.

USA
?hlins USA Inc.

Tel. +1 828 692 4525

There may be considerable room for cost saving as Cramer has somewhat of a monopoly here in Australia.

Regards,
Andrew

got the price for the ohlins shockers for the mini: $2150 for the full set (front and back) inc. GST from the aussie dude...bit pricey...but not crushingly so...definitely an option...

Have you priced some Gaz and AVO gas shocks. They come in std and lowered height and coilover, and they can be rebuilt. Alloy Protech shocks come in std and lowered and coilover as well. You could get them into Aus for a lot less than buying Ohlins shocks
Cheers Paul

Ina,

Ohlins - used by everyone who wants to WIN (nearly every F1 team, and every Moto GP team). Valentino Rossi loves them!!

Fully adjustable and rebuildable (you never replace them unless they are damaged) - Spax dont even come close.

I will tell you (ask Minstar), you will notice the difference.

Just buy them and enjoy being on the cutting edge!!

Andrew

hmmm bugger...apparently the ones made for the mini by ohlins AREN'T adjustable...would it be a big problem if i fitted ST44's? i mean seeing as how i am welding the suspension struts onto the subframe i could pretty much fit anything within reason...right?

Ina,

Adjustable are a bit of a must these days - if you are prepared to use the function.

A lot of people sprout the values of fully adjustable shocks but never bother to tune them into their current driving environment - a waste really.

If you are customising your suspension setup with unequal length upper and lower control arms (A-arms), or however you are doing it, the question you have to ask yourself is: Is the shock acting directly on the upper (or lower) control arms, or is it remotely acting via a linkage (F1, Indy car style - my prefernce).

This will then govern your placement of the shock and its design and features.

Once you have this sorted this out, you can then get advice from Ohlins as to the correct shock for the job.

Cheers,
Andrew

well i want as many points of adjustability in my suspension setup to compensate for slight inaccuracies in subframe fabrication and to allow a professional to tune the setup to be as good as it possibly can...i think not going adjustable with the shocks would be a mistake...but then i could be wrong :P

as for the style of shock i was thinking going with the standard config (ie. directly acting on the top control arm) rather than doing something similar to the z-cars people and going with the linkage style...

ST44's are $1350 a piece...wouldnt need em for the back though...so would only need 2 for the front :P but that kinda absorbs more than my entire front-end suspension budget just in shocks :P
