on the subject of wanting more and more power, my nieghbour did this going from car to car wanting more power. he now has a nissan GTIR and still wanted more power on goes the front mount intercooler , bigger exaust ,more boost and then POP he blew the main bearing and the motor is stuffed. he pushed it too far and cant afford to fix it

if you want more Power now is the best time to get the motor in top codition to handle these mods

be carefull some of these imports although having low kms sit in traffic. all day long in japan

Sounds like youve got the right idea and done a bit of research, ive seen both these motors next to each other at an importer (4efe and 5efe) the only real difference was the inlet manifold on the 5efe was huge but the blocks looked the same. Finding something out of a smashed Paseo would be the go and use only the block for bigger cc

This could start a new string, I think a N/A 5efe with cams, porting and computer could be a good alternative package to the GTI motor (toyota fans) Siting in a roung nose

if you wanted to go toyota n/a then i dont think you can go past the 4age 20v. This block is pretty close size to the 5efe, but the box is about 50mm longer. Plenty of power stock and 100's of performance parts available. Can also get a 6 speed with the black top motor :D

The 4age is my all time favourate motor I fitted the sprinter motor and box in my last celica

I measured up a fwd 4age years ago to fit the mini but both inner guards would have to go and although being longer the diff position looked as though the steering rack would have to be relocated

last year one of the editors in mini world was going to do the black top conversion but put it in the to hard basket in the end

i have read that the 5efe block will bolt straight on to the 4efte...its actually a fairly attractive hybrid in my opinion as one of the differences between the 2 is that the 5efe has a deeper sump and alot of 5efe owners take 4efe/fte sumps and bolt them straight on to the 5efe...same can be said for the head :)

not sure...but i have heard that approaching 200hp at the wheels (unmodified internals) the 4efte starts to get a bit flakey...

nothing is forged in the 4efte......it differs from the NA 4efe by having flat topped pistons instead of domed top ones(giving lower compression)......and has slightly thicker rods....

The block of a 5efe is 10mm taller than the 4efte ;) pistons are the same size......
I have done a bit of looking into a 5efe NA conversion....but in stock form they are a waste of time and money over the 4E. They only have about 69kw at the fly.
The best type to get is the 5efhe.....high compression, bigger cams, different inlet manifold......but still nothing against a 4efte or a 4age 20v.
oh, one more thing.....a common upgrade for people not wanting to (or cant) go to a front mount intercooler is to use a mazda rx7 top mount.....it's cheap, and more efficient than the standard toyota one.....also easy to fit using all the original piping!
