Post subject:  Lower control arm new bushes cracked

G'day,
Fitted up the new bushes to the lower control arms a while ago and while going to fit up the hubs, I noticed that the driver's side bush is cracked.
The control arms have the straight bushes part number 2A4294.
The passenger side is ok.

The bushes were a bit wider than the arms and squashed up when I tightened them.

I gather it's the expansion of the collar that's caused this but why one side and not the other? Just dodgy rubber perhaps?
OK to leave as is or time to buy some more? I haven't pulled the arm out yet to see what the bush is like inside the arm.

Thanks Rocky

Dodgy Indian (or elswhere) rubber...lucky it wasn't engine mounts...

It's a pity that you can't buy decent stuff. I tried Mackay rubber but they don't make them for the mini.

I'll ring around and see if I can find anyone with stock other than from the UK/AU sources.

Just wondering, is your suspension otherwise standard? Wondering if extended bottom arms or adjustable castor bars have pulled the bush out of it's intended alignment.

Hey Fuzzy, all stock standard mate and the subframe is not even in the car yet, it's still on a set of horses. I've been re-assembling it and so far have only fitted upper and lower arms. Did this about 6 weeks ago and noticed the cracking today when I was going to fit the hubs.
Lower arm was not connected to anything - just sitting in about the position it would on the car.

Mine did the same on my 850 after less than 6 months.
Rubber parts these days aren't great I'm finding.
Cheap enough to carry a spare set just in case.

Stripped my Mk2 front down today to replace wheel bearings and ball joints. Chasing a problem when driving through round abouts. It does a bit of "skip to the left and back to the right". Found right lower control arm bushes disintegrated and left side non existent. Bushes were replaced when the subframe was refitted a couple of years ago and again before the vehicle turned a wheel. Second set were supposed to be a higher quality. The car has been on the road just over 12 months. Ordered new bushes today from a local company that had been in this town for years. No longer trust the Mini suppliers from the south.

My rubber ones were the same after 2 years (maybe quicker but I didn’t notice). I’ve got some black poly ones now on trial and so far they’re OK. Mine are the later tapered type

Sounds like I'm not the only one with this problem. That's pretty ordinary after only 6 months or 2 years. I reckon the ones I pulled out were most likely the originals and they weren't completely buggered. Pins were pitted though.

Mine come from the minispares/minisport stock. I wonder what sort Karcraft / MKO / Minisplus etc sell?

Where are you getting yours from Stibbsy?

Ditto on the rubber bushes, lastest about 5 years but low k's. Passenger side though.
Thinking of trying the poly ones also.

A local company here in Townsville called Fulcrum Suspensions. Been going for years, so that says something IMO.

Thanks - I googled suspension joints up your way and their name came up.

Are yours straight or tapered bushes?

I've got poly now after crap rubber ones. They fit better at least. Not much road time yet though

The straight type. There were also a 'cotton reel' type.
His supplier is from Brisbane.

Thanks Stibbsy.

Talking to a mate in the auto trade and he says Fulcrum and Superpro have same owners so I guess they'll be Superpro bushes.

As far as I can tell the straight bushes should be part number SPF0258K. Would be great if you could let us know how you go with them and if this part number is the right one size wise.
