Post subject: | Rear wheel bearing preload |
G'day, Gradually putting all the bits back together and finished off the front hubs today following the Doc's "how to" for timken tapered bearings. Passenger side was spot on first up and the drivers side was a tad loose so adjusted spacer accordingly and all good. Onto the rear hubs soon and I've got a set of timkens to put in them. These are the ones with what looks like a half spacer on each of the cones. I've been reading a few threads on both this forum and the UK one and I'm a bit confused about torquing them up and also if I should fit the small o-ring that comes in the kit. Do I do them like the front ones and if so, what is the correct torque? Or do I do them like a trailer or caravan hub and set a preload by feel? I was on the Timken site last night and they have a video about setting preload. It reckons to torque them up to 50lb, then back off the nut 1 full turn, then torque up again to 10lb, then back off nut 1/6th to 1/4 of a turn. Thanks, Rocky |

If rears feel lumpy when torqued up, I loosen them off then do finger tight and pin to next hole. They are not like fronts there is no mechanical need to torque for power transmission. Treat them like a Holden or Ford front wheel. You could mess about making a shim between them but there is no point. |

Hi Regarding the o ring, i believe you only fit if the radius arm has a recess. (Just outboard of where the inner seal fits). I think the 0 ring was a ROVER mini update. If no recess then no o ring. |

Thanks Doc and FNQ. Sounds simple enough and I can't see anywhere for the o ring to go. Will fit them up when I can get down to the mate with the reamer for the bush in the radius arms and get them sorted. Rocky |
