Post subject:  Smiths Tachometer Issues

Hi everyone,

I had a smiths tacho installed by the guy who services my ‘69 Mk2 Mini and it has never run accurately. After running the car for 5-10 minutes it will register 4000rpm at idle !!

Also the glass was broken during installation

Any advice on what I should look for to resolve the tacho issue and also thoughts on replacing the glass?

Also, the garage were great - not criticising them at all

Cheers

While awaiting comments from others perhaps have a look at this publication.

RVC should mean suitable for electronic ignition...take a section of the glass to a glassworks and get them to cut you a new one (including drilling the hole in the centre) or contact an instrument shop near you (check out the Mini Businesses thread...)

There are conversion and or replacement circuits for these Smiths tachos in the UK for DYI use:
https://www.spiyda.com/tachometer-electronics.html

Otherwise you will need an instrument repairer, who might have access to a replacement crystal. Most Smiths tachos have a plastic "glass" with the red pointer riveted onto it.
Removing the bezel without damage is a patience tester!
