Post subject:  SU Heat Shield Differences?

I had a look at some of the twin su's I have and noticed there are different types of heat shields fitted.

First type the shield narrows from the top down.

The second type starts to narrow about 1/2 way down the shield.

I believe they are both BMC original factory shield types as they both have the remains of the unused vacuum advance bulb holder (broken off on both of these images)

Any help with why the difference would be appreciated and what they were originally to. Thanks

(Sorry about the pics not being real flash, but you get the idea... hopefully)

Just resurrecting an old thread. On my set of su's that came with the car ( 3/70 mk2 S), it seems to have different heat shields. They aren't stepped and seem to be bent around to shield the float bowls more so than std. Everything else appears to be as original (fuel line clips, brackets etc). Any ideas ? I do have another set which I'm fairly sure are correct, just wondering, is it better to restore whats there or use the other set if correct. I have never run 1.25 su's before on any of my Cooper S's , only a weber - just restoring these for completeness.

The extractors originally fitted to the Cooper S were pressed metal and had a fairly sharp turn from the horizontal exiting the cylinder head to the vertical. The heat shields cleared the extractors with some room to spare. Presumably BMC never anticipated that these would break and rust through quite early in their life and be replaced by aftermarket extractors using steel tube technology that took a wider turn and, on some, touched the heat shields. That may be why yours are bent to provide clearance.

The drawings of heat shields shown in Tony Cripps' Cooper S book are the same as shown in your last photo (8905), with holes in the same places and with the step in both halves. I've never seen the flat heat shields with curved edges.
The manifold is the type used on later Ss with the larger cast boss to fit 1.25", 1.5" and 1.75" SUs.

Thanks Bill and Doug. Yes, its the later manifold. I have collected a set of 1.5" and 1.75" su's on the same manifolds. I've never run a std set of 1.25"s, tried the 1.5's for a while. I'll post some pics when I pull them down.

All disassembled now. Quite different to std ones, though don't look home made. I will use my other set.
