Hi, Just wondering if anyone has an idea as to where the noise is coming from in my front end. I thought it was a wheel bearing on the left side as it had a bit of play, I replaced it and still the same. I then thought it could be diff or something in that area. I changed engine, gearbox and drive shafts and still the same. (engine needed changing anyway). I changed the other wheel bearing to see but still the same. Noise is like a wheel bearing, its not the engine, i can turn the engine off and it is still there. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. Steve |

Thanks Tk, It had cv joints in it before I changed the engine and gearbox and now has universals . Sound is the same. Steve |

Could it be brake related? As in the pad or brake lining dragging? |

Does the noise change when you apply brake pressure? |

It doesn't change no but i guess it is something to check. Maybe a cylinder is stuck, but i would think the shoe would wear away. The noise has not changed for a while. I will have look at that over the weekend hopefully. Steve |

Diff. Or drop gears? I’ve got no idea what I’m talking about by the way. Just thinking what else turns on bearings that sounds like wheel bearing grinding noise. Gear box? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

So the mini made the strange noise. Then changed the engine, gearbox and driveshafts so we can rule those out as it is still making the mystery sound. It's not CVs as the owner said that they are new. The only things left are wheels, the right hand wheel bearings, brake drums....... jack the car up and spin the wheel is it slightly buckled? Is there a drag on the brake drum? How does that right hand side sound when turning the wheel? |

Thanks, I have changed both wheel bearings now, still the same noise. I will jack it up this weekend hopefully and check the brakes. The brakes are all i can think it is now. I will post back with anything i find. Steve. |

Ball or roller bearings? If the latter, Timkens or noname? Many noname ones come with an incorrect spacer, if too thin it overloads the bearings when the hub nut is torqued up. See my blog in the how to forum. |

The noise is almost certainly coming from the front. I thought it could be coming from the back and somehow getting transferred to the front but i dont think thats the case. The bearings are just standard ball bearings, with the built in spacers. Steve. |

Can the brake shoe return springs be put on wrong way round so the middle part of the spring rubs on the hub, like they can at the rear hubs? |
