Another job on the to do list is the rebuild of a cast iron water pump. Has anybody done this?
I have soaked the pump in dieseline for a couple weeks and have managed to remove both the impeller and the front pulley. Delicate task now of pressing out the old bearing etc. Any advise on the best method to getting the sucker out?

When I removed the impeller there seems to be a seal or something inside the pump. It has a spring inside it. It basicly fell to pieces when the impeller came off.
I have a new bearing but do not have this spring thingo. Is it simply a matter of pressing in the new bearing and re fitting the pulley and impeller or is the spring/seal thingo needed.
Any help with this would be much appreciated.
Cheers

That spring item is in actual fact the water pump seal.
It has a carbon ring that rubs again the impeller.

A very old design which was superseded many years ago to the later type.

So is it needed if the pictured bearing is used. It looks to have its own seal within the bearing?

It certainly is.

The seals in the bearing is to keep the grease in the bearing.

Richard. You mention that the seals are available. Do you happen to have a part number etc.
