Post subject: | Help needed - 850 chassis and body numbers |
I am looking at adding a better description to the 850 register for the chassis and body stamping locations and changes. There are 7 combinations of stampings and a more accurate description will assist owners and potential buyers where to look and what to look for. I am searching for info on the following- Cars between YMA2S1 5300 and YMA2S1 5600. I am trying to pin point the chassis number move from drivers side to passenger side firewall and the floor number move from drivers side to passenger side. Cars between YMA2S1 10222 and YMA2S1 12493. I am I am trying to pin point the body number change from a 6 digit UK number to a 5 digit Aust number Cars between YMA2S1 12493 and YMA2S1 14423. I am trying to pin point when the passenger floor chassis number stamping ceased. Cars between YMA2S1 34500 and YMA2S1 35500. I am trying to pin point the move of the body number from behind the ID plate to the radiator shroud. Cars between YMA2S1 45500 and YMA2S1 48500. I am trying to pin point the start of the YDO code stamp M2/15. PM is fine or reply to this post. Any assistance you can provide will be much appreciated. So far I have something that reads like this - Location of identifiers on the Australian 850 body: • ID Plate riveted to the firewall (passenger side up to approx 16500 then behind master cylinders ) showing: o Car Type (YMA2S1) o 9/ prefix for January to June 1961 assembled cars o CKD (Complete Knock Down) UK Car Number up to Australian Car Number 32000) o Australian Car Number (sequential commencing at 501 through to 60688) o Engine Type (8AM/U/H or 8Y/U/H) o Engine Number (four, five or six numerics) o Colour • Australian Chassis Number (same as ID Plate Car No) was stamped in various locations during the production period. The first CKD cars had a chassis number on the driver’s side firewall and also the floor behind the driver’s seat. At approx car 5400 the chassis number moved to the passenger side firewall above the ID plate and the floor chassis number moved to behind the passenger seat. The floor stamping was deleted at approx car 13000. The chassis number moved to the driver’s side of the firewall below the ID plate at approx car 16500. • Body numbers. CKD cars had a UK body number (six numerics) located behind the ID plate. At approx car 11000 the UK body number changed to an Aust body number (five numerics). At approx car 34500 the body number moved to the radiator shroud. An Australian YDO code stamp M2 over 15 in a circle was also stamped into the radiator shroud from approx car 47000. Australian body numbers range from very close up to a few hundred numbers higher than the chassis number. Edit - change points |

The first chassis number move from drivers side firewall to passenger side firewall and the floor number move from drivers side to passenger side may have coincided with the floor pan change from part no 14A6491 to ALA4593 at car 5361. The body number move from the firewall to the radiator shroud may have occurred when the firewall panel was changed from part no 14A6474 to HYA2120 at car 34534. |

GTO Early 1961 850 assembled from a 1960 kit has a hand stamped ID plate (see example in the 850 register) fixed on the passenger side of the firewall. A 5 digit number 50043 (CKD kit number) is stamped on the passenger side firewall next to the speedo/rotodip hole. The Australian body number is stamped on the driver's side of the speedo/rotodip hole in the firewall. The Body Number is also stamped in the floor behind the driver's seat as you mentioned. The UK car number only appears on the ID plate with a 9/ prefix. |

I want to try and get the 6 changes down to within 50 or 100 cars if I can. |

Are you talking about the car/chassis number an inch or 2 below the ID plate which is visible in the engine bay or the Body shell number which is hidden behind the ID plate and only visible when the ID plate is removed? I am trying to identify when the body shell number moved from behind the ID plate to the radiator shroud. The last car I have listed with a firewall body number is YMA2S1 34483 and the first car I have listed with a radiator shroud body number is YMA2S1 35607. Thanks |

Hmmm yeah my bad - the stamping is the plate number... I've never seen a number on the radiator shroud and I dont recall seeing a number under the plate when I did a bare shell rebuild of the car back in the early 80's either. You've got me intrigued now!! Time for some investigating... |

The radiator shroud number is the body shell number which has no real use after the car is painted. |
