People have been telling me that instead of fixing my gearbox I have now from a 1965 Cooper S I should just get a rebuilt one, but the ones I have found are off of standard 1275 engines. Is there a difference in gearing or am I missing something else. Right now the gearbox is connected to my 998 engine so I don't know much about the difference in gearboxes

Yes the ratios are quite different. I would get your MK 1 S one reconditioned to keep it original. They are worth more.
What car is it?

On the front of the gearbox there will be a number cast in - e.g. 22G333, 22G68 and that will tell you what type it is and where it came from

There are lots of different gear choices - normal ratio, close ratio, 4 sync, 3 sync (A or B type) and then lots of different diff ratios

A mid 60s Cooper S box is a 3 syncro 22G333 with a serial number 12FA xxxx. They came with a remote housing shifter.

The Sunshine had a 4 syncro Rod change style 22G1832

Take it to a proper Mini workshop and get a second opinion. Unfortunately the people you are dealing with have NFI.

Beware of any repairer who says something like "its the wrong box (although it is possible), its completely shot - need a new one, I can take that old rubbish off your hands" etc

It's not the original engine it's out of a late 60s van from the engine number

Other side of the gearbox case - at the front under the oil filter

22/xxxx is the serial number given to a box fitted to the YDO 22 (M2/22 body).

Here is a pic of an early Clubman 22G1128 4 Syncro Box with a serial number 22/3721

Yep it says 22G**** so I should keep the gearbox. So I'm going to get the keep the gearbox. But who would would you recommend to rebuild it? I'm never rebuilt one and the last time I asked mini makeovers they said it would be $1800 to rebuild it. Who else would you guys recommend?
