Post subject:  Flitch Panel Holes

The flitch panel on the Mini cops a fair bit of attention as it's one of the only spots in the engine bay where additional items like heaters and relays are able to be easily fitted. To assist those returning their car to original condition I think it's worth identifying the holes that were present in the panel when new.

Ausdino has kindly supplied the following image of a flitch panel from a March 1970 MK II Cooper S that looks fairly original so is a good base to work from. Also below is a pic of the panel from my Sept 1970 MK II S which some holes labelled (e.g. Police siren), and a diagram of a UK flitch panel with Lockheed servo holes identified.

Comments are welcome from anyone who can add to the discussion, especially to confirm the holes for the Lockheed power brake booster. Did the main bracket use the same holes as the PBR servo bracket?

Here are another 2 Flitch Panel ID guides. Although they are UK MK1 cars it shows the difference of the holes from early to late flitch panels.

They have done well on the UK panels. Now we need a set of agreed Oz ones.

Unfortunately I don't seem to have access to the engineering drawing. That would've explained everything.

Allen, I'd always called them inner guard.

I dug out a couple of boosters and it appears both brackets for the different type of servos, use the same holes.

You will also notice the Bonnet Stay Bracket was moved back towards the firewall. This appears to have occurred in Dec 1967 around YKG2S2 3600 on the MK1 Cooper S.

I reckon your car would be the same as this. Not sure about No11 though.

I have an early 1966 S and the regulator was located behind the gusset panel and not in front of it.

Thankyou Macka and Thankyou Bill.

Bill would you happen to have a clear photo showing your inner guard with it all disassembled similar to the one Macka shared?

Thankyou
Brenton

Correct. However the regulator holes were still there - just not used.

Does yours have the small hole at No11. It wasn't used on the Mk1 S?

The 4 Heater holes used on the deluxe were probably not drilled out either.

I didn't take any photos rebuilding this one. Photography was still in its infancy when this rebuild began.
But I can confirm gtogreen's photo - ie. no Number 11, no fresh air heater, but has the countersunk square holes unused.
Couldn't work out where the regulator went/and was oriented. Found 2 holes behind the gusset and the wiring showed where it wanted to go back in to the regulator. The regulator holes are vertical and the terminals face to the front of the car.
