So sad to hear this. Didn't realise I was getting so old that another one from my generation has left. He was an anti-hero who knew how to drive an ordinary car to get the best from it. Saw him once at Amaroo Park for the beginning of a Southern Cross Rally. He was driving a factory VW Golf. A promoter had put up dollars for the rally car that could jump the longest over a hump on the Amaroo dirt circuit where the rally started. Lots of spectators cheered the cars as they raced up to, and over the 'yump'. Andrew Cowan drove up to the yump... slowed down, and drove slowly over it, not wanting to damage anything. Seemed boring at the time but now realise that he had a job to do and that "ego" didn't take over at that point. The VW Golf later retired from the rally with 'broken drive shafts'. At least Andrew knew the car's weaknesses. |
