Hi guys I’ve got a Rover Mini 30 which is just the normal 998 carbed version, same engine as leyland 998. I haven't started it much over the last year as I've been saving up to get it rwc and back on road. But every time I start it now it's a struggle. I have it on full choke, acellerater fully down and have to turn for about 30 seconds whilst pumping accelerator, sometimes it kicks in and there's lots of pops but as soon as it does and I've got my pedal to the metal, it's like the engine cuts out and dies. I then turn it over again and have to keep the revs up high for a good 30 seconds otherwise it will do it again, it feels as if it's a mission to start the bloody thing every time. I've checked the leads whilst running to see if there was a dip in revs but that didn't do anything, any suggestions at all? Thanks in advance!!! |

If you’ve got an SU carb messing with the accelerator pedal won’t do much as: SU carbs don’t have any form of squirter to add fuel The piston is going to be down and closing off air as you’ve got little airflow I’d start with some basic stuff like: Check the battery is full charged and take it to a battery shop for a free health check Drain and replace the fuel if it’s months old If you have a mechanical fuel pump check the carb fuel bowl is full Check the choke is fully engaged at the carb end - that you can’t rotate the choke lever any further by hand Then if it’s still rough things like: Spark plugs Points in the distributor if you still have them Check the resistance in the plug wires Check the compression Check the timing Good luck with it! |

It dosnt have a Holley double pumper so no need to mash the pedal. |

aha, same situation here I hope it is not compression because no shop on Guam can help me do a rebuild. What numbers are we looking at for compression for a 53 year old engine? |

Depending on camshaft but something between 120 psi and 160 psi is ok. Just make sure each pot is within 5 or 10 psi. Have the engine warm, all the plugs out, throttles wide open, turn over for 8-10 seconds or when the guage maxes out. Don't use the starter for more than 20 seconds each time or give it a few minutes to cool down if getting hot. I am surprised there isn't a proper mechanic in Guam. |

Check that the piston inside the carburettor is free to slide up and down. If it is stuck slightly open, it will be hard to start. The piston should have oil inside its tube and on the outside too to help movement. |

Really, it's a pretty basic engine to work on. Plenty of Mini rebuilds done in the Philippines, or Japan of course. |

Yep...it was just a way of getting you back on the road...the matching numbers engine can stay under a tarp!

I tried to start the Mini today. I check for fuel in the floats and yes it does have fuel, fuel pump working. Check spark plugs for spark, there is there is spark although I thought they were weak. I sprayed the carb with starting fluid the car started for a but abd then died. It would not start without the starti ng fluid. My iginitiin coil is the only thing I have not replaced in this car. This means there is no fuel going in. Does this mean I should remove the carbs and give them a good clean? When i richen the mixture it is easy to start but the plugs foul right away.... Any thoughts??? Thanks |

how old is the fuel? take the float bowl lids off and fill them when fresh fuel then see if it'll start |
