I was involved in an on racetrack parade of cars recently...we were advised by someone who should know about these things...that our insurance may not apply in the event of an accident or damage...

Any track, any where...

We were also advised that this change may also effect Motorkhana's and the like...

I suggest even road events might be the next on their bean counters list!

I will be reviewing my insurance cover if Shannon's, who have made their name being the "friend" of enthusiasts, invoke these changes

I always that that was always the case? On a track = no insurance. Competing in a Targa event on road circuits = no insurance.

It’s pretty clear in the PDS. Not covered for driving on a track. There is optional track cover available
https://www.shannons.com.au/library/doc ... ce_PDS.pdf

But pretty standard stuff for all insurance companies

Important information – Shannons Insurance

Exclusions applicable and cover limitations to vehicles on a race track

To Car Clubs,

Shannons is a supporter of motoring clubs, events and associations committed to sharing the
passion of the Motoring Enthusiast Community we so proudly serve.

From time to time Shannons attends and supports events at race tracks and racing circuits
(Race Events). As part of our ongoing commitment to our customers and the broader
Motoring Community, an opportunity has been identified for Shannons to better assist
customers attending Race Events (including your car club members) to be aware of and better
understand exclusions under Shannons Motor Insurance (SMI) that apply when their vehicle
is on a race track.

We want to ensure our attendance at Race Events does not create an impression that SMI
automatically covers customers out on the race track or the course. Accordingly, from 1
October 2019, we will display the attached notice at Race Events.

We value our relationship with your club and its members and wanted to provide you with
this information in case your members see this notice at future Race Events and ask you about
the notice.

If you require any further information about this notice, you can reach out to us by contacting
your local Business Development Manager. Additionally, we can arrange for a member of our
underwriting team to attend one of your future car club meetings to talk to your members.

Thank you for considering this important notice and your ongoing support.

We look forward to seeing you at an event soon.

Team Shannons

Important Information – Shannons Motor Insurance

your vehicle is there solely for a purpose other than driving or riding or use in a motor sport event to

However, you may have limited cover if the racing cover option applies to your policy. This option applies
for vehicles over 60 years old or when recorded on your Certificate

or
an event which has been approved by us in writing or by way of endorsement to your policy.

RACING COVER OPTION – LIMITS AND WHAT IS NOT COVERED

We only pay up to the lesser of the cost to repair / replace your vehicle, the agreed value of your vehicle,

We do not cover any legal liability connected with the use of your vehicle for any motor sport event.

WHAT IS A MOTOR SPORT?

Motor sport means participating in, preparing, practicing or familiarisation for any form of motor vehicle

WHAT IS A RACE TRACK OR TESTING GROUND?

Race track or testing ground means:

It does state touring assemblies under "What is motorsport". We have done regular parade laps on club runs at several tracks and at some of the tracks are called "happy laps". Yes, they become more than a parade lap and at times near "race" pace. I guess that this is not covered??

A great suggestion (T.I.C.) was made to me...invite your local Shannon's Rep to lead any parade

CMC day? Check and establish what is/what is not covered before making the decision to participate...every time :!:

Spoke to a representative at Shannons today re clubs attending motor sport events for such things as parade laps etc and he said that if it is a CAMS run event you will not be covered by their insurance if you take part in any way. I raised the point that clubs affiliated with CAMS and have events such as day runs or a touring event that CAMS issues a permit for, the answer was that the same would apply.

Motor Sport events run by other sanctioning bodies he thought would come under the same guidelines but could not confirm.

Yeah Ive always been under the assumption since forever that any form of racing on a track or off a track is not covered.

Yes ..but.. it was always the case that you were not covered for any event where you were actually timed. But the T&Cs now seem to say 'not covered "at a track" if in any way involved...'. I take this to mean that anyone there - other than as a spectator (which is mentioned in the T&Cs) would not be covered ... i.e. marshals, time keepers etc even though their vehicle is not involved the policy holder is....

I guess people get CAMS permits for the liability insurance .... but if its at the cost of participants vehicle insurance then the whole concept needs a bit more thought...

Cheers, Ian

Shannon's predictable gobbledygook...

We appreciate you bringing your concern around Race Track cover to our attention.

We can confirm there has been no changes made to the cover we provide. What you have copied and pasted above is the level of cover that we offer. The purpose of talking to our associate car clubs is to make clear the limitations and policy restrictions that apply to Shannons Comprehensive Motor Insurance policy holders, while participating at race track events.

Further clarification of this can also be found in our Product Disclosure Statement which is available on our website.

I encourage you and anyone else with questions around their individual circumstances for race track coverage to reach out to one of our team members by calling Shannons on 13 46 46 to discuss what level of race track coverage you would be eligible for.

Thanks!
Team Shannons

Seems pretty straightforward?
Shannon’s has pre existing PDS with all the terms already there
They decide to provide information that just because they sponsor events doesn’t mean their cover applies on track

Nrma vintage has the same clauses, just about every insurer will: page number 37
