Hi guys, I'm having a problem with my HIF44.

Here is a short video of an issue I solved a few weeks ago (thought I'd solved?). The nut needed tightening in order to make sure the butterfly spindle and the lever assembly were locked together.

I had a similar issue come back again, but here is the issue - I cannot tighten the nut to secure it. And also I can't back the nut off to remove it.

I'm don't have a detailed knowledge of how it's assembled...is this likely to be a stripped thread? Or is there something that's vibrated loose and is missing? Here's some other pics...(I took off the spring myself)

Help appreciated :)

Bingo, stripped thread on spindle.

This is why it has been playing up, maybe I tightened it too hard when I fixed the issue last time. Or maybe the damage was already done. Time for a rebuild kit.

Hi, judging by the photo your hif has been part of a twin carby set up, as the nut is long and hollow
if you don't want to replace the shaft because thats a tricky job to get right, and that those two linkages are secure on the flats of the shaft where they fit, then you could fit a small spacer where the shaft has lost its thread, then fit a nut further out where the thread is still ok. From memory the thread is 5/16 UNC, but I am sure someone will correct that if I am wrong. you will need a locking device for the nut, but it looks like there is enough thread to use 2 nuts and lock them against each other. Cheers Lindsay Siebler

Iomin, Thanks for your wisdom...is that why it has that nut, I did wonder! It has an extra spring wrapped around that long hollow nut (it was off for the pics I posted above), so I thought the long nut was to hold the spring.

Unfortunately, when I backed off the nut, even the threads that aren't completely stuffed are mostly stuffed. Have a look at that pic above...not very healthy threads unfortunately.

Now, a complicating factor...I have a spare HIF44 here (one from a blow through turbo, so there are some differences) and the shafts/spindles are different. This HIF44 I'm working on has a longer flat section past the thread on the choke side (I can post pics later). When I fitted the other shaft from the other HIF44, the levers didn't fit. The flat section ended when the thread ended so there wasn't enough room for the two levers to mount in the right position. It's all a bit hard to explain, not sure if it makes sense.

I have ordered a rebuild kit, including shaft, but it looks in all of the pictures that the shaft included in these kits doesn't have the extra flat section.

EDIT: also, I was keeping it simple but this is also a factor: The play between the levers and the butterfly spindle I had before was actually caused by the square section of the spindle flogging out and rounding. I "solved" it by tightening (overtightening) the already-tight nut. It managed to pinch the levers a little to seemingly solve the problem. But also stripped the thread and it finally let go. So even without the thread issue, the square section of the spindle is crappy and rounded.

I found a solution. The idle lever was the one with play. I tack welded it to the lever next to it, which removed all play. Then used a large nut as a spacer to clear the flogged out thread and used a nut to gentle torque down with Loctite.

All working well. I do have spare coming for a better longer term solution.
