Post subject: | 1098cc with only 2 compression rings |
Hi I am refreshing my 1098cc engine (new rings and bearings) Everything is still standard sizing (Bores, big-end bearings and main bearings) Stock pistons for 1098cc motors normally 3 compression rings and 1 oil ring, mine has 2 compression rings and 1 oil ring. There are no markings on the pistons, and I'm a bit lost as to how to find the right rings for my pistons. Any ideas? |

The only thing I can find is a 998cc piston ring set for '89 onwards. Appears the pistons have been changed at some point. I'll measure the ring grooves and see if they are the same as the '89 onwards spec. |

Hi, most times you find 3 ring pistons in 1098 they are Repco pistons, they were fitted from standard. They had wider rings (2mm or .078" top and 2nd?) and the replacement rings are dearer then a set of new pistons, and the wider rings usually ruined the ring land and made it too wide ( if you can fit a .003" feeler gauge down the side of the ring then throw them away, they will fail in the next life quickly. 1100 motors also wear the bores badly most times, my opinion is get it measured, but the odds imho are 95% that it needs reboring. The two ring numbers that come to mind are C1200 and M1259 they are the numbers for the 998 and 1098 repco pistons, just cannot remember which is which. 1100 motors do not take kindly to re ringing, with extremely high piston speeds cheers Lindsay Siebler |
