Post subject:  Coil spring hi lo's- spring loose
Hi everyone,

Does anyone else out there have issues with their coil spring setup with hi lo's? I've tried to lower the car back to original height however, the springs both front and rear are loose and not seated properly when jacked up. After doing some research I think I have narrowed it down to 1 of 2 things,

1. No bump stop bump stop/ rubber buffer under the front suspension arms allowing the suspension arm to drop all the way down and creating too much space between the spring and where it sits (not sure about the rear)

2. The standard shocks are too long also when jacked up to adjust extending out the whole way also creating too much space to have the springs seat correctly

Has anyone else come across this problem before? if so what was the solution to the problem?

I'd be fitting rebound pads and see what it looks like. There should be a rebound pad at the rear too which stops the radius arm from dropping down too far

I have returned all 4 corners back to the lowest setting I possibly can and the front is still 20mm higher than the rear. I've ordered the front rebound pads too try and get the front equal with the rear or a tiny bit lower. Where does the rebound pads go on the rear? I can only see a bump stop at the top

Must admit I've not ever seen a "rebound stop" at the rear. If you remove the shock absorber you better have a prop under the brake drum ... or it falls on the floor..... I reckon you could use a bit of old seat belt to make a strop ... a bit like the drive shaft safety straps that some of the dragsters use..

The springs I've seen have a very small travel range. So, when set lower then the standard mini height (which they seem to almost always be) the strut will come loose at max rebound. I assumed you would need a non standard (much thicker) rebound stop at the front ...

Hi, I have Japansese coil springs in my road cooper S, and they ride brilliantly. But, I had to make unique Hilows and top spring platform to get height to work. They do not come loose, and that rear limiter goes on the subframe behind the cast area where the knuckle jointt fits in the trailing arm.
I would be suspicious that you will need to modify front hilo system..

I've managed to get some standard rebound buffers which has helped get the front a little lower to get the car level however to get the front lower more like standard I think I might need something bigger. I found some 'oversized' rebound rubbers from the US but these are about $30 each plus shipping from mini mania.... I think this is US dollars which is bloody expensive!

Depends what you mean about “standard” ride height! From the factory they were very high. Remember they were designed to take 4 people and their luggage and still have suspension travel. Roads in the 60’s were also a lot poorer than now. Ideally you’d want the front driveshafts close to horizontal and the rear a bit higher than that. Then you can have a decent amount of travel before you hit the bumpstops (especially if the springs have less travel or are softer than the rubber cones)

I have installed standard rebound buffers to the front which sorted the front end out which is now sitting perfectly.

I've got some rear rebound buffers to install on in the rear subframe, does anyone know the easiest way to install these? I'm planning on removing the radius arms to install them but there doesn't look like there is much room between the subframe and rear of car to get a bolt and washer in there......

Use a short bolt inserted from the subframe side and hold the nut up between the body and subframe with an open end spanner....
