An interesting article in today's Melbourne Herald Sun newspaper highlights the need for all of us to be particularly careful when working on, and especially under, our cars.

Patience, quality tools properly used and common sense is part of what it takes to remain safe.

Of course this is not restricted to we backyard mechanics. Professionals also need to be mindful as they spend most of their day in an environment where nasty and sometimes lethal 'accidents' can occur.

I’d also highly recommend having a phone within reach when working alone.

My old Mazda had a reverse hinged bonnet with a poor locking mechanism. When I put my hand on the front of the car the bonnet slammed close, latched and trapped the end of my fingers between the bonnet and the body. If there hadn’t been someone inside who heard me yell I could have been there for hours. Admittedly not life threatening, but it makes you think twice in the future
