Hi guys, I am sick of constantly having to tighten up the door latch catch, the mechanic recons a stainless steel insert like a helicol will work on the bit which moves around on the door frame. any one had success doing that? Its been over tightened at some stage and I have done a die and tap and still no luck getting it to bite in and stay |

Sometimes you can go up a smidge (technical term for small amount) using a metric size. |

you could certainly put a helicoil in it, but you've used some loctite on it haven't you? |

Yeah, helicoil with a smidgen of Loctite retaining compound. Also check the catch itself, maybe the serrations that grip the door pillar have worn flat. And door adjustment is important. If you have to slam the bejesus outa it when closing the door, its not adjusted correctly, and the door lock tongue is smashing into the catch and making its life an utter misery. |

Thanks guys, Just wondering how you did it, my mechanic isn't to keen on the job as he said hes worried the floating metal bit will drop down, as there in no access behind the panel. Thinking I might do it myself is it easy? Thanks Brett Nosse |

That floating metal plate inside the B pillar can move around for door adjustment but should not drop out completely. If you remove the striker plate and replace 2 of the 3 screws, perhaps with a small washer under the head, they would hold the metal plate in a position where you can access the damaged thread. The screw size is 10gauge - 32 threads per inch UNF but if the holes are damaged a Recoil that size might still be too small. |
