Post subject: | Some help with wiring please |
Hey guys, I'm about to install and wire up an auxiliary cooling fan in my Mini K (has an A+ Metro motor) and was wondering which wire I should tap into to use as the low current power source to switch the relay on and off? Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers Simon |

You can run either a thermatic switch, or maybe just a manual switch in the cabin. IGN 12+ feed is what you need, most likely from the fuse box. |

Usually it's triggered by a dedicated sensor that comes with the fan kit, your temperature sensor / gauge uses a voltage range and is generally unsuitable for triggering a fan. Modern cars the fan is controlled by the ECU on the value of the temperature sensor (often different to the gauge's sensor). So your options as I see it are:
You mention it as an auxiliary fan I take it this means you are retaining the mechanical fan? If so it probably means you don't want it on permanently, so a switch or sensor. |

Sorry guys I should have specified i'm using a switch in the cabin to activate it. Also retaining the factory fan. This is just for hot days/stop start traffic. I was a little concerned about which power feed to use as I didn't want to burn the switch out etc. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to wiring. Thanks for your help, greatly appreciated! |

That's easy then, any 12V switched feed (12V when the ignition is on) that goes to the switch and then out to the relay, pay special attention when plugging into the relay otherwise all the current goes through the switch! The power feed to the relay is probably best taken from the solenoid (battery line to the front) and fused and find a nice solid earth from the fan. |
