It's my understanding that the exhaust system on most mini's would have been coated with some sort of paint. From reading through the forum it's known that the exhaust header on the Cooper S was paint black. Just asking if the rest of the system was also black or that silver colour that you see on a lot of new old stock exhaust's systems like middle pipe's - muffler's - tail pipe's. Cheer's |

The engineering drawing for the Cooper S headers doesn't include finish details but I also understand they were painted black. I've just had my headers ceramic coated in black and they look like the NOS originals I've seen in the past. The engineering drawing for the Cooper S exhaust system shows the muffler as being Galvabond (so natural silver colour) and the long pipe unpainted but with a rust preventative coating. The short tail pipe that is welded to the muffler at the rear has a finish note saying "To be painted with Lusteroid chassis black BLMC part no. BP651 to withstand temp up to 600 degrees F". Edit: I believe these are NOS extractors. Attachment: 12g615.jpg

Greg had a NOS exhaust system a few years ago. You should ask him if he has any photos of it. low n blown wrote: I have a brand new old stock genuine S exhaust going on 28C. Will be good to hear what a genuine S actually sounded like from the factory.

I would guess that any paint on S exhaust manifolds was for transit/warehousing purposes and burnt off when on the vehicle. The original manifold and engine pipe on my S were always rust coloured. In the 1960s there were almost no paints/coatings that could cope with manifold temperatures and very few zinc coating processes that manufacturers were prepared to pay for. There were more exhaust shops than hot-bread shops in the '60s for that reason. We have a 21 year old Camry still with its complete exhaust system - a mini from the '60s would have had several sets of replacements in that time. |

Thanks for the input and your reply's. I have a New Old Stock S manifold which I had coated by HPC Coatings in black. I'm keen on painting the mid pipe and muffler so wanted to get some feedback. Will post some photo's soon - once I get that issue sorted  Thank you to everybody on Ausmini for there time and help and have a Merry Christmas. Cheers Pete. |

If you can't afford ceramic coating, try pot belly black paint from barbeques galore or elsewhere. Rheem still use it on flue components in some of their high efficiency gas water heaters. It's good stuff.
