Post subject: | gearbox ID |
Hi, I bought a 1098 engine and box 10yctah (mini K i think??) and a 22g1128 box. Is the box anything special? would it have close ratio gears or not? does it matter? Cheers |

Gearbox is a Mini K 4 synchro remote shift. It would have standard ratios. Cooper S 1st motion shaft and cluster gear can be fitted but cost over $400 now. Only gives 1/17 increase in 1-2-3 gear speeds. Much cheaper to fit a 3.1 diff instead ,which will make 1-2-3 overall ratios the same. With 4th gear taller for cruising. Assuming the 1098 will pull it, this is no problem with a 1275. |

Apart from the 1st motion shaft, cluster gear, final drive ratio and diff drive, the mini K box is the same at the Mk2 S box. All the shafts and bearings and most of the intermediate gears are identical. With the changes drmini has mentioned you have a Mk2 S box - they are the same casting and internal dimensions. I fitted a 1275 cc low compression motor to my mini K and kept the original gearbox and final drive(3.765). It went very well with quick acceleration low down but busy at highway cruising. Later fitted a 3.44 final drive which didn't make a big difference to the cruising or noise. I think minis are noisy at any speed. |

Thanks guys, I'll just run it with the gears that are in it, I assume 3.44 diff which should be fine (if not I have the gears to change it). I'm going to do a 'project smallbore' of sorts on the engine so it should pull it all ok. |

If original it would have either a 3.76 diff or perhaps a 3.64 (as early 1098 Clubby got). |
