This 1970 MK II S has been restored but has the correct radiator, heater and PCV hose clips, plug leads and caps, black dizzy cap, wiper motor, washer bottle and partially taped loom. I believe it should have a white plastic fan from the factory but happy to be challenged. Attachment: DSC01575.jpg

Thanks Doug. That photo will be very helpful. Why a white fan? I do remember my car having the narrow blade yellow plastic fan. There is the narrow blade and then a wider blade which I'm going back to the narrow blade with black water pump pulley. Interesting point! White fan. Thought it was only on the Clubman GT. Cheers Pete. |

White fan came before the narrow yellow then wide yellow. My 5/70 Minimatic had a white one before the blades flew off it. They were more brittle. |

Ditto the white fan on my 8/70 S and still in one piece. This one is still flexible. Engine colour seems very pale - not very green and more like mini K colour? |

Thanks for the photo Bill B. In your photo the fan seem's to be more yellow looking ![]() All the photo's seem to be making the topic more confusing ![]() ![]() White/clear or Yellow fan? Have sorted some detail but the engine will need to go back in soon so a fan will need to be fitted. Any further information on this detail be be much appreciated. Then do you play it safe and put on a yellow fan as I have heard that the white/clear fan flies apart on more than a few occasions. I keep thinking back and Ive seen a lot more yellow fan's fitted than white/clear. Cheers |

I notice the PCV valve in both photos are bare alloy or silver. Is this correct? I was going to paint the body of the PCV the metallic green engine colour, but I will take the advice if the experts. |

The reason so many engines now have the yellow fan is because the original white ones failed. The UK sell the white plastic fans new but I would only fit one that is made from sturdier plastic than the original ones. If they cannot guarantee them not failing then I would use the yellow fan. I don't have many colour photos of that era but the attached colour pics of a Mini K engine and Clubman Van engine both have the white plastic fans fitted. Attachment: 1969 Mini K engine.jpg Attachment: 1971 Clubman Van engine.jpg And just to add some more confusion - The Mini K van brochure has a pic of the new fan they have fitted. Yes its yellow but it has 3 bolt holes???? Attachment: Mini K van brochure.jpg The early Mini K sedan brochure shows the steel fan. Attachment: Mini K engine bay.jpg

Following people have confirmed my understanding that the MK II S (and early Clubmans) had the white plastic fan. John Smidt (MKO), Brian Pope (Link), David Walker (Link), Lindsay Siebler (Link, etc.) |

Its a shame we don't have good colour photos of the MK2 S engine bay from the period. We mainly have to go off photos of unrestored cars or brochures. I don't believe the PCVs were painted on purpose - maybe oversprayed. All of the PCV valves shown in brochures or period magazines appear unpainted. The majority of the PCV valves I have seen on cars are unpainted. Here are some colour photos that may help. 2 are unrestored cars and one is the MK1 S colour brochure. Be aware that UK power unit painting was different to Oz. I see discussed on some UK forums the method of painting certain ancillaries already attached to the power unit. |
