| Post subject: | 3 into 1 exhaust manifold |
Anyone got any good tips for tightening manifold bolts with 3 into 1 manifold and twin 1 1/4 SU's. Spent hours getting it tight, I thought, but have exhaust leaks. Nut at inside of #1 runner (for carby/exhaust) is impossible to get anything onto. (Well almost) Aaarrggghhhh. Knew I shouldnt have taken it off

When you say 'bolts", the manifold usually has studs fitted to the head and the manifolds are held on with washers and brass nuts. If you are using bolts, are they bottoming out before crushing? What exhaust and inlet manifolds are you using? Is there a difference in the thickness of the flanges? Have you fitted the exhaust manifold on without the inlet to check for fitting? Are you using a perforated metal manifold gasket, because they don't seal well on minis. Will long, brass manifold nuts fit and give a better access? |

Whoops. Slip of the typing finger. Studs and nuts. Engine is 1200 series - Clubman GT No change to setup. Took of to install new head gasket, rockers and take a look at piston condition Nuts are brass type (Short) long ones will not fit, exhaust runner in the way Washers with cutouts and faces on manifolds to match. Nothing changed here, was seating previously Inlet Manifold - AEG573 twin hs2's (Original) Exhaust - Original clubman GT. Similar design to Mk1 Cooper S cast type, but welded (I assume original) Fitted prior to check alignment. Nuts (#2, #3 from radiator end) are very close to exhaust so cant get socket on. Stubby open end can get in there but has to be ground down to rotate. Gasket is metal backed reinforced type. Used previously without issue, but will take a better look tomorrow. Perhaps its time to upgrade to lcb. (Which we have done on my son's car and better access for nuts) Thanks anyway Geoff |

If it is all original and was working before taking it apart....? My Mk2 S had the original fabricated steel 3 into 1 exhaust manifold until it blew a hole in one of the outer runners. Could hear something but didn't see the hole for a while. It was directly opposite the No. 1 exhaust port. |
