Ive just purchased a 1972 Mini Clubman.

I am just wondering how i can tell if its the original engine from the factory or if it has been swapped out.

Cheers

No way of knowing other than to compare with similar cars of same vintage. Even then it's not precise. If you post the car ID from the ADR Compliance plate others can tell you what the engine prefix should be, but not the actual number. If you had the original drivers handbook it would be shown in there.

All the factory production records were destroyed when Leyland Australia closed. That's why registers are being compiled for the more desirable models (Cooper, Cooper S, Clubman GT). These are hosted on this forum.

A Mini Clubman from 1972 should have an eight digit engine number starting with 1001. The remaining four digits should be higher than the car number.

Engine number starts with 1001 and the last 4 digits are 665 greater than the car number

Good work. I would be almost certain that is the correct engine for the car.

In theory the engine number should be 500 higher than the car number. But as production goes on the numbers get further out.

However, it is known that certain people retained service and maintenance records and they still exist and would give an accurate picture of what went on....

I've been told a certain individual noticed the warranty record cards for at least the Cooper S on leaving one evening but they were gone when he went to get them the next day.

It would be of benefit to many enthusiasts if access to the service and maintenance records was possible, even if tightly controlled. Would be a shame if the person(s) you mention kept them hidden and they were then thrown out by the family not knowing their value.

It would indeed! But years of approaches to the Sydney person has resulted in zilch...so...to the tip they will go, if not already :!:
