| Post subject: | Engine number decoding |
Hello I hope someone can help decode this engine number. I've looked at a few sites but get conflicting information. I'm looking at a purchase but I don't think they are matching numbers, not that it matters in itself but the origins would be handy to know The number is 99H-249-H4040 Attached is a photo Any thoughts would be fantastic, thank you |

99 = 998 Engine H = Transverse 249 = C40 Dynamo, Std Ratio All Synchro Remote-Control Gearbox, Alternate Final Drive Ratio H = High Compression 4040 = unique serial number I don't these were ever used in Australian cars, during this time they were assembled in Australia and had 9Y engine numbers. Seeing as your engine looks to have the engine number tag on it I'm guessing it's an import? |

As timmy201 has correctly identified, this looks like a non-Australian built car. The bonnet hinges being at the outer extremity of the engine bay and the presence of the engine number tag still riveted to the block are simple giveaways. Also the non-Australian wiper motor. It looks like quite a bit of modification has been done to the brake line plumbing and the electrics. Are there any car ID plates visible? |

Wow you guys are real sleuths! I have to say I'm not sure what all the 249 and H stuff means from a practical point of view, but perhaps it was the original engine then. The seller tells me it was originally from japan, and once LHD but now RHD I think a mayfair from the ID plate. So the RHD conversion, plus maybe a different engine, and now the mods to the brake line and electrics as mentioned just has me concerned it could be a bit of a hodgepodge |

Honestly they tell you nothing about the engine spec at the moment. That engine would be 1970's I would guess, as it originally had a dynamo (not alternator) and all synchro gearbox. Code 249 means that the original engine spec was Ub + Ze + Te Ub = C40 Dynamo Ze = Std Ratio All Synchro Remote-Control Gearbox Te = Alternate Final Drive Ratio H = High compression - just means it's made for a country with decent fuel and would have slightly better performance than a low compression engine. Again, this could have been changed in the last 30+ years. Is this car registered in Australia at the moment? |

Thanks for all the info. Certainly interesting and useful to be aware of. It's one that through a few degrees of separation is available to me from overseas (NZ) at a relatively affordable price. I know that the import process has a lot of hoops though and just didn't want to bite if it was an iffy specimen |
