I'm sorting out all the bits in the shed in order to build a better gearbox than the one that came with the 850. I really like the idea of a between-the-seats gearstick but I also really want to keep the floor start button. Can I have both? |

Yes. There is no problem with the remote shifter and a floor starter I did have a problem initially with a larger diameter RC40 exhaust touching the live side of the starter button. I gave it a hit with a hammer and made a divot on the exhaust pipe to clear

If you have the same exhaust set up then think about some heavy duty electrical/heat insulation for the switch body, its terminals and the cables possibly covered by insulated sheet metal

They started using buttons on modern cars again, I think. |

Have you thought that you can spin the switch so the terminals are North and South instead of East and west. Gives you better clearance. |

It does make a lot of sense when the battery is in the boot and the battery cable runs right under the floor. It means you can install the starter button there rather than a key and a solenoid/relay. You can also crank the engine over with the key off so there is no chance of the engine starting if you want to build oil pressure or test compression |

cooperess wrote: They started using buttons on modern cars again, I think. With everything going 'keyless' these days, it's almost a logical step. It wouldn't be hard to do for ignition in a mini but those '62 door locks aren't going to open themselves, that's for sure. |

The problem is (tho) that in the cut and thrust motoring of today...if you stall, and have to take your eyes off the situation you find yourself in, even momentarily...you are liable to get cleaned up by someone  As for modern cars...try crawling up a steep incline in the UK in a car that shuts its engine down...and don't re-start as quick as it should...throw in a foot operated parking brake and you have a recipe for a rolling backwards disaster

The wife's Golf is auto everything. Hill start, Hand brake, auto start after stalling and engaging clutch, Lights, mirrors... All the stuff you'll forget to do when you go back to the poverty pack 850.
