How does one check for cracks in the sump before rebuild? The sump is bare but has what looks like an external crack.

Where do you get the dye penetrant from?

Pressure wash it inside and out
Pressure wash it again
Clean the crack area inside & out with prepsol
Add a couple of drops of blue food colouring to the suspected crack, wipe off with a clean dry cloth
The crack will be evident if it exists

get it welded up anyway - if it's not a crack now, it might become one later

I have a proper Rocol dye check kit, can check for nix if you want to send it down.
Can get it TIG welded by GR if cracked.
Got a pic?

It is simple just splash talcum powder on the crack outside and put some Kerosene on the inside. The talcum powder will soon tell you there is seepage of any sort. It gets wet. "words came to me from the late Mini Guru JACK READ back in the 80s".

If you find it is cracked you can get it repaired at Lynx Engineering according to the following advert from the 1970's.

Use another Mini K etc case. Restamp the box to the S number if you care enough to bother. :)

I had one welded once. I drained the oil and took in the whole power unit. The welder flipped it upside down, welded the crack and even built up the broken off fins. Charged me next to nothing.
