Just another rant about the carbies, seems difficult to tighten the rear nuts on the carbies ,do you use a grind down spanner ? 9/16 af

I just use an open end spanner if the studs are too long. But I also remove the entire manifold with the carbies. I dont remove or replace the carbies with the manifold still fitted to the engine.

That's been my experience too. I think it's just 'mini: if you can see it, you can't touch it; if you can touch it you can't see it". Many modern spanners are very long and getting caught up on all the springs and cables is usual. I have to keep turning the open ended spanner over to get just 1/2 a flat at a time.

Admittedly I only have a single carb, but I bought Sumer stubby ROE from Supercheap just for working on the mini.
Surprising how much easier things are with them.

I think the original nuts were not as thick as a normal nut .

I filed down some stainless nuts to fit my 1-1/2" twins .

Are you able to point me to what you are referring to here?

Go to Bunnings and buy a cheap short ring open ender spanner for $1 and cut the ring end off to make your own stubby.
IIRC the nuts are 5/8" AF.
Edit: Just checked and the nuts are 9/16" AF.

The nut size on my carbies is 9/16 AF which means Across the Flats. Not the dia of the stud. I will check if there were smaller nuts used they would have to be 1/2 AF. You cant change the stud dia as you know. Pain to fit.

Nuts are 3/8 UNF, 9/16 AF and around 5mm thick. Photo shows a cheap 1/2 cut open ended spanner that I've used for years. The carby set shown are from a Mini (jigsaw puzzle) I bought last year. Could not find the proper nuts so I machined down some thicker 3/8 UNF nuts to make them easier to fit.

The nuts used on HS2 (1 1/4) carbs, as said above, are 3/8inch diameter (of the stud) UNF thread and use a 9/16inchAF spanner. I think they are called "half nuts" or "lock nuts". See minispares comment:

The HS4 carbs use smaller 5/16inch studs that use 1/2 inch AF spanners. These nuts are full sized.

I love the price. I have them mind for other little jobs too.

Lower rad bracket bolts, clutch cover, lower engine mounts...

Stubby spanners can be very handy. The amount of spanners in ones toolbox though:
stubby, standard, long ring & open, ratcheting, offset ring, long ring ring. Goes on and on...
