It has just come to my attention that there are 2 types of hand brake cables 1 for hydro suspension and 1 for dry suspension. Does anyone know the differences in these cables ? I am not sure if I fitted the correct cable hydro mini.

There's more than that.
UK minis had different ones again - I use them on my car because its easier to adjust and holds better I think.

Learnt something new. I don't even know there were 2 types for Aussie cars

May explain why I ran out of adjustment on one of my hydro cars.... even when I replaced it didn't make it any better.

There are also 2 lengths of handbrake actuating arms at the backing plate.
The longer ones, IIRC, are from later Clubman cars.
For motorkhana hand brakes turns etc the longer arms gave more effective rear brake shoe force with the same handbrake lever force.

The two handbrake cables for OZ built Minis saloons are part AYA5017 for rubber sprung cars and GVC1021 for hydro cars. The van cable is different and the Moke has two versions to suit 10" and 13" wheels. UK Minis are different again.

The table in the image below comes from the engineering drawing for AYA5017 showing the length and other features for all saloon, van and Moke cables, other than the hydro type. The length shown in column L is measured from the centre of the hole in the bracket end to the very end of the threaded rod. The length in column A is measured from the trunnion fixed to the cable to the bracket end hole.



I've asked John Smidt to measure the length of a hydro cable (GVC1021). I will post the answer here. All that info should help in getting the correct cable for your car or identifying which one you have now.

I understand that part GVC1021 was not available for a period so some Mini parts places supplied AYA5017 as an alternative. Apparently GVC1021 is now available for those wanting the correct hydro cable.

well there you bloody go - good work Allen - I thought there were only 2 types, van and sedan... I've put newies in a couple of times and they're always too long. Not that much of an issue if you keep the back brakes adjusted and the shoes fresh, but the spring does crunch up a lot
