The Lukey L132 is/was an option. A nicer note than the RC40 which are really quite effective, but "soft" in note. The steel wool filled Lukey are quite a bit heavier than the glass fibre filled RC40s.

Didn't realise how hard it would be to get a muffler for my 70 cooper S!! My local muffler guy has no listings, (no real surprise), but he wants the diameters to get the right one. He wants the length, width, height and I believe it should be 1.3/4 inch pipe. Or has anyone purchased one recently for a muffler shop that would have a part number or brand. I have tried RC40, but he thinks that is a part number but not sure what brand?? I would rather buy and and have it fitted with new pipe locally, rather than have one delivered. He had a few listings for moke Californian. Would this be the same or close?? It was a 1275. Any help would be appreciated. Only a couple more things and hopefully it will be on the road for the first time in 38 years!! |

You want something like a Redback 5inch x 3inch glass packed straight through muffler. They are a standard sort of muffler. Any good exhaust fitter should have known that. A326GP (14in length) A334GP (16in length) A342GP (18in length) Length depends on how noisy to want it. (Shorter is louder) |

RC40 is a brand, common in UK. They make a variety of single and double box systems for minis and other makes. Since Lukey became NLA I have had an RC40 on 1 mini with Cooper S (1 3/4 inch O.D.) engine pipe, for many years. Works well, slightly quieter than original S but still has a burble. I have recently bought another RC40 for another standard S system. It is oval shaped, 6 1/2 inch X 3 1/2 inch X 19 inches long. Inlet and outlets are in centre to fit 1 3/4 inch S system. While I am not trying to "push" RC40s, they do work well and are freely available from many mini retailers. "Maniflow" is another UK brand I want to try, but they seem to be dearer and not easy to find locally. |

I've recently acquired the exhaust system for my MK II Cooper S but yet to install it as the engine is still out of the car. I'm reverting to a set of the original pressed metal extractors so wanted as close to possible original front pipe, muffler and rear pipe to go with it. As mentioned above I've selected an RC40 with original size and shape front pipe. The mountings are all original style, including the front clamp that bolts to the remote change extension. All my parts came from MKO, but other Mini parts suppliers will have the same items. If you want your exhaust shop to do all the work just give them references to the part numbers and they should be able to buy from a Mini outlet at a good price. I obtained all the bits shown in the parts book diagram below. Here's an MKO link to the two main items. I had a Lukey L132 that I was planning to use but realised it's a bit shorter than the original Cooper S muffler so sold it on. Here's the 18" oval Lukey muffler that was on my car when I got it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Bought mine from either Karcraft or Mini King. Worth comparing prices across suppliers as they vary a bit. The original Lukey muffler for Cooper S was p/n "0904". Stamped on front-facing end plate. I still have one on my 1970 S, fitted in 1991! |

my last couple I've bought the muffler and pipe kit online and fitted them myself the pipes come with the right bends etc. - but it's a "measure twice, cut once" kinda deal so if you're not confident fitting it up then get someone to do it |

I sold my mug and now have a stick so I don’t think I’m to confident doing it well. It has some small muffler at the front and that’s it. No other pipe to the rear. You basically have two choices... Buy an RC40 ..which was specially designed for the Mini, or have your exhaust guy build one to fit. I have an RC40 but ripped the centre box open on debris on the road. The local specialist looked in his stock and chose a suitably sized HotDog to slot in place. I'm surprised your guy wants you to specify box sizes.. IMHO you pay him to choose something suitable and bend and weld pipe to fit it.... I have a spare RC40 in the shed that I bought a few years ago to replace the one I bought about 30 years ago. But its still hanging there because the old one refuses to die.. Cheers, Ian |
