Post subject:  Red Plug in rear trailing arm

Hi All,

Im just after a bit of insight into the red plug on the rear trailing arm as i bought a 67 cooper s which was all in bits and it has come with 2 sets of rear trailing arms, 1 set with the red plug in the body above where the shaft is, and 1 set without the red plug, im curious as to what this hole that the plug is in was for, and is it a coopers s thing or did all models around this era have them.
Any info would be awesome.
Thanks guys

Do you mean the hole for the handbrake quadrant pivot pin?
Is the red plug for sealing in storage?

If this pic uploads this is where the red plug is, other than this, the trailing arm is exactly the same as the other trailing arms without the plug

That looks like a kelvindale plug to keep dirt out of the inside.
We use them on parts that are stored for any length of time.

i have read somewhere that some people put in another grease nipple in about that area to improve greasing the bearings. Maybe there's a thread under the plug?

I initially thought the same thing but it would be sending grease on the outside of the metal / plastic tube which is not where it's supposed to be, it would uselessly be filling the arm with grease, unless they didn't put in the tube...

Yeh i have taken the old plug out and there was no thread under it and it would seem that if it was an extra grease point it wouldn't really grease the right area, that plug thats in it now is a new one i made out of urethane
