Got my engine block back from the machinist and this had apparently come out of it.
I'm not sure what it is or where it came from-does anyone know?

gearbox to engine locating pin - the fat end goes in the block, the skinny end goes in the gearbox or could be for the transfer case to locate the same way |

They probably took it out to mount the block flat for machining. |

Photo before block off to the machinist, I took out the what was left of the dowel. Block had been sitting upright buried in red soil for a significant period before I bought it. Molasses bath will work wonders. Attachment: dowel.JPG Attachment: block.JPG
