Just a general question on how people feel about the braking performance from the 8.4" disc setup. I have that on mine (haven't driven it yet) and I am hoping it will be pretty good for the weight of the car, bigger than the 7.5's so I assume they'll be fine. No brake booster fitted, not sure it they make a difference or not? |

Yes a booster makes a difference it feels like a modern car not Fred Flintstone's. |

Doc! haha! I'm a Fred Flintstone then! Maybe I'm wrong but I thought without a booster the brake efficiency is the same but you just have to stand on them a bit!? |

Am I right in saying the last Mini (1275 LS) had 8.4" discs with no booster. |

Yes. An MG midget had the same, they felt like a block of wood too. My car has S brakes and greenstuffs. Had no booster for 25 years but I had one on the shelf. Fitted it on a few years ago, no way now would I remove it. ![]() It lives under the dash... No room under bonnet due to Matic heater. |

The booster doesn't change the pad to disc friction, just the force at the pedal. I've been driving my 7-1/2" disc braked mini with no booster for some years now and am accustomed to the pedal effort. My son took it for a drive over Christmas with me and remarked how hard you had to push the brake pedal. Doc is correct that a booster will make it feel more modern, but so would power steering, air con, twin cam, 6 speed auto, power windows,...... I like my mini as it came, simple raw motoring. |

So Phil, stick with what I've got I think? I really couldn't be bothered with all the effort/ expense/ dramas to install a booster. However, I do warn/ train anyone who takes my cab for a drive they must STAND on the brakes if they want to stop in a hurry! |

So the 8.4" brakes will stop the mini pretty well? Just have to stomp on them a bit, I can live with that I think. |

I have the 8.4's, no booster. There is no stomping required, I find big toe pushing sufficient in traffic, but I guess it depends on how hard you drive. I drove around with the drums for a while and got used to the stopping distance. |

How are 8.4's compared directly to 7.5's? Lets say it's the same car, same wheels, same road etc what is the difference? Coming to a normal stop from 60km/h would be easier and or quicker yeah? Is brake fade and heat issues less common? I'd assume breaking distance under heavy/emergency braking would be the same as tyres would be the limiting factor... |

8.4 needs less pedal effort than the 7.5, both unboosted and with greenstuff pads. Not exactly like for like as my car has 13" wheels to suit the bigger brakes. |

Man, having 4 wheel drums and no booster is a learning curve. I thought stopping the torana was hard. Feels like the whole weight of the car on one foot haha! I was thinking of 7.5s and no booster just for a bit of safety, but I am definitely enjoying the "active driving" aspect. Im interested how you mount a booster inside though?? Ha ha. It's funny reading stuff like this. Back in the dark ages, cooper s discs were state of the art. You could go further back to Austin 7 's.... cable operated on two wheels only. More lime speed retarders than actual brakes. |

bluehishouse wrote: Im interested how you mount a booster inside though?? Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk I drilled 2 holes in the firewall, and made another sandwich plate for the 2 brake lines and vacuum hose, where heater hoses normally go through. Will add pics shortly. Booster is a MK 2 S one, PBR VH 44J. I can pull the motor out without the drama of booster and piping in the way. There is more foot room than there is with a Clubby heater. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
